Joomla! breaking a layout: Question

Does Joomla 1.5 parse html differently than Firefox/IE7?

I've got a site just about up and ready to go with a custom template.  Its a tableless layout that outputs correctly in both IE7 and Firefox, but when I try and preview it in Joomla everything gets broken and screwy and I don't understand what could be going wrong.  Background images are not displaying.  I've tried both absolute and relative urls to point to them and it still doesn't want to show them.  It also has completely thrown my layout all cattywompus and I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get this thing to work.

Can someone throw me a life preserver here?

Woops, nevermind... color me embarrased... :-[

when I uploaded my template I didn't update the link to the stylesheet...
