1.6 is still in the planning stage. We are current assessing 109 feature requests for inclusion ranging from very big things (like ACL) to very small things. No dates for anything are set but I'd like to tepidly "aim" for an August-ish release (all things going well).

The new extension manager is in. The framework for the ACL UI is also in but not completely hooked up - but there is enough there to give you a few clues. I suggest you check out a copy of the development trunk and just have a look (note some things may be broken from time to time).
