Thanks. From what I can tell, since both systems use an index.php file you cannot have them installed and enabled side-by-side. With some work, you can have one or the other enabled by switching up the index.php file. It's quite involved. The original intent was to have a user copy and paste content from one to the other.

i should slightly have expanded - you can have them in different sub directories, but still use the same database. eg domain.us/joomla and domina.us/wordp

Can one be in a subdirectory of the other?
e.g.: domain.dem/ <--- Joomla.
domain.dem/blog/ <--- Wordpress?

Re: Can you install Joomla and WordPress side by side?
just to make it clear, providing each install is in its own directory
e.g.:
domain.dem/ <--- Joomla.
domain.dem/blog/ <--- Wordpress
and they have different prefix to the database
eg
Joomla jos1522_
Wordpress wp3_
then they can also share one database but performance may be affected on high traffic sites.
follow the respective security arrangements for each script

Re: Can you install Joomla and WordPress side by side?
Hello
I am new to Joomla so please forgive me if this is being posted to the wrong forum.
I am in a real pickle!! I downloaded WordPress this morning to use as a blog to my site *** URL Removed ***. After installation the WordPress theme replaced my Joomla template. How do I restore the Joomla template? I signed up for Backups service from Joomla.
Thank you.

Reason: The Domain Name mentioned (www sportsoverall com) does not exist and this link goes to seller of the domain name.

You have replaced your Joomla site with a WordPress site. If you have a backup of your Joomla site you will need to use it to restore your site. You installed WP in your root folder which overwrote your Joomla site. Uninstall the WP site then restore your backup and re-install WP in a subfolder, like blog, then just create a link in your Joomla site to your blog folder.

Thank you dpacadmin. I may need to keep asking questions as I am new to this.
In my root directory, do I delete the MYSql database for Wordpress?
I signed up for the backup offered by Siteground. Is that what I use to re-install Joomla? Thanks

In my root directory I have several files that start with WP - do I uninstall all of them?

Re: Can you install Joomla and WordPress side by side?
Siteground's backup should just replace your root folder with the backup one and give you back your Joomla site. I am only guessing though as I don't know what they backup, best to ask them first. Tell them you accidentally installed WP to your root folder and you would like your site restored.

Re: Can you install Joomla and WordPress side by side?
Joomla and Wordpress or other scripts can be used on the same site. As per posts: use of Joomla as the parent site with Wordpress used as a blog/article site is an example. Considerations include:
1) Security. Each of Joomla and Wordpress may use security and access management tools that only cover the specific CMS and included files/folders. Databases are usually external of each other, require their own access passwords and may not be backed up using one CMS backup extension/plugin. Site scanning, file monitoring, spam filtering, etc. are also normally separate.
2) Users/subscribers and their corresponding access rights are normally separately signed up, authorized, and otherwise managed. Utilities are available to transfer or synchronize users between Joomla and Wordpress. However, the customer tables and fields are normally stored separately in separate databases unless otherwise merged.
3) Other functionality such as lists of articles/blogs, categories, menus are authored and managed separately unless merged through a utility or manual operation.
The out-of-the-box way that Joomla and Wordpress can be used together is as two distinct CMS applications platforms. While they may use many elements, such as MySQL databases and similar 'look and feel' and administration, they require separate management unless that is organized using a synchronization extension.
Whichever serves as the 'parent'/ entry site, links to the other CMS can be all that is made common. One CMS can occupy a folder within the parent site. It might be excluded from backups of the parent site or, if the dependent database and all necessary files are included, may be redundantly backed up by the parent site.
Using both Joomla and Wordpress can provide 'best of worlds' capabilities for blogs, or is a specific application, such as WooCommerce is preferred over Joomla equivalents or vice-versa. Each of these platforms have advantages or their extensions/plugins may have such importance to make use of both a benefit that outweighs the trouble of setting them up and administering them.
