Joomla X-Cart integration

Post by code.stream » Fri Mar 17, 2006 3:26 am

Hi,

We are working on registration/single sign-on integration between Joomla and X-Cart and were wondering if there is any interest in such commercial patch set/module from other Joomla community members. We can prepare a patch set and distribute it for a reasonable price  ;)

If you are interested, please let us know.

PS. Please see http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... #msg605850 for details.

I may be interested.

Have one X-Cart store, working on another.
Much prefer open source, but nothing really compares.

Actually most interested in integrating the forum users with X-Cart customers.
Perhaps a X-Cart Joomla SMF bridge.
Have not needed the tight integration on the Joomla X-Cart users.

Be interested in seeing what you have done.

Note to moderator: If this is to be a commercial product, perhaps this belongs in the commercial forum.

Hey Ken, I'm looking for some info that contrasts Xcart ZenCart or VirtueMart. Do you know of any good articles. What do you feel that Xcart has that the OS based ones don't. BTW, is there a ZenCart bridge for Joomla?

We do not have a ready made solution for SMF X-Cart integration but would be glad to create such a bridge for you on commercial bases. If you are interested, please PM us with project requirements and we will be glad to discuss details.

PS. By the way, x-cart is open source commercial software. It is provided with full sources (not encoded) but for money ;-)

I don't know of any good comparisons.
The only way to really tell is install them and use them.
Then you find all the "why won't it do this" issues.

I built an entire site with OSCommerce, hated it, and then found X-Cart.
Rebuilt the entire store/web site again.
The store was for a very high-end product, large inventory, with substantial turnover.
X-Cart had many of the features I was trying to hack into OSC using the mess of add-ons.
The license fee was small in comparison to the price of the total web site development fee.
I ate the license fee.
Saved HOURS.

I would never use any code which is encrypted.
The X-Cart code is all available for modification.
For an expensive web site with specific needs it fit the bill.
For small hobby sales sites it may be expensive.
The site development hours saved were worth the cost in this case.

I know OSC has a Mambo bridge.
There was some discussion of a Mambo-ZenCart bridge on the ZenCart site, but I have not seen it.
Last I looked at ZenCart they seemed to be progressing well.
OSC was controlled by one person and development seemed stalled.
Code was spaghetti.
I have not looked at these for quite awhile - things may have improved.

I have not used VirtueMart.
It too seems to be appropriate for small to medium sites.

I am working on another site in the same industry.
This time it is all on me - no client.
Using Joomla for content, link directory, gallery, forum, a linked store (X-Cart).
Don't have to have user integration.
A Joomla/X-Cart bridge could be extended to the forum via an existing Joomla/SMF bridge.
If something easy and cheap was available, it could add some value by saving some time.

Thanks for the detailed response. I have some friends that have had the same experiences with OSC. I hear Zen Cart addresses a lot of those issues and was hoping they have a Joomla bridge by now but haven't seen it yet. Softwares just like power tools, it can save a lot of time if you buy the right one up front! I don't think charging for something violates the spirt of Open Source and Xcart provides the source but I haven't looked at their license yet.

I'm in the midst of evaluating a few carts so perhaps I'll post some more on it later. Thanks for the feedback!

I have personally tried Zen Cart and I love it.  I have also used VirtueMart and love it as well.  However Zen Cart seems a bit more powerful and particularly more flexible in shipping.  I have set up Joomla to link to Zen Cart via Link - URL menu item that opens up in a new window.  True, its an added administration aspect and you would have to style Zen Cart to look like your Joomla site.

I agree with the assesment that VirtueMart might be more geared to smaller sites whereas Zen Cart seems to be nearly a complete solution.  I dont have a lot of experience with X-Cart though I have tried it.  I went to Zen-Cart's website and reading the few posts regarding integration with Joomla they seemed almost repulsed at the thought of doing such a thing which is disappointing to me as I think Zen-Cart would be a wonderful addition to the eCommerce solutions.

In fact it came to a point in deciding how I was going to re-organize and revamp my website that I nearly abandoned using Joomla just so I could use Zen Cart, but in the end all the features Joomla offered won out in the debate and I dont reget it and havent looked back other than just to see how well I could link to and style Zen Cart to reflect the set up of the Joomla site.

So, would I pay for a bridge to Zen Cart.  Well if I were going to do that I personally want it to work extremely well.  I would rather just see Zen Cart integrated into Joomla like VirtueMart is.  Virtuemart has a great deal going for it and it is powerful and my only complaint with it has been just the small lack of flexibility in certain areas that Zen Cart addresses.

I think integration would be better, in my personal opinion, would be better than a patch for just the registration.

Hello,
I would be interested in something that integrates joomla and x-cart.
For example, it should be possible to access x-cart's session variables
within joomla. Is there an way to accomplish this in the meantime
until there is some product that is able do this easily?

I would also be very interested in this x-cart/joomla integration. Has there been any headway in its development?

Yes, the project was completed about 2 months ago. So far it works great on site of original person who requested the mod.
If you would like our company to perform the same mod for you, feel free to send us a PM with your contact details.

Thank you.

We created Joomla - X-Cart connector, so x-cart scripts can
see/use Joomla code/data and vice versa (it is possible to get access to x-cart data from Joomla scripts).
Also, it handles full accounts management synchronisation. So an account created/deleted/modified in
one system gets created/deleted/modified in another one. Those changes
can be performed by an end user or by x-cart/Joomla admin.

At the moment the connector does not work with CB.

Hello,

We provide a patch for Joomla (all 1.0.x versions including 1.0.13) and X-Cart 4.0.x/4.1.x for $55.00
(per domain license).
The patch set includes patches for Community Builder (CB).

Main features:
  • X-Cart has access to Joomla's functions and data, so you can show Joomla data on x-cart pages or call joomla functions from x-cart code.
  • Joomla has access to functions and data of x-cart, so you can show x-cart data or call its function from Joomla. For example you can show x-cart categories list or cart contents on Joomla pages.
  • It handles full accounts management synchronisation. So an account created/deleted/modified in one system gets created/deleted/modified in another one. Those changes can be performed by an end user or by x-cart/Joomla admin.
  • It guarantees session continuity. A customer logged into x-cart gets automatically logged into Joomla and vice versa.
  • Accounts created in Community Builder are synchronized with x-cart and vice versa
  • The patch set comes with a sample custom module which shows x-cart cart contents (amount of items purchased in x-cart and x-cart order total) on Joomla pages
If you are interested in the patch set and/or would like us to provide you with links to demo sites, please contact us at cdstrm@gmail.com

At the moment it does not support interaction with CB. But we are
going to release updated patch with CB support in January.

We'd be interested in the connector too!  We'd be looking at using Joomla 1.12 (currently) but does it also work with Joomla 1.5?

Hi - I'm curious about the status of the Joomla 1.5 -> X-Cart 4.1.x Connector... is it available now?

I'm working with a family member to upgrade his site from Joomla! 1.0.x to 1.5.x and would like to try to get tighter integration with their X-Cart install in the process.

Thanks,
Scott

Unfortunately Joomla 1.5/X-Cart 4.1.x Connector is not ready (we are rather busy with custom development work, so did not have a chance to complete it yet). We are going to provide our beta testers with first draft version in about 2 weeks.
