jUpgrade was available from Red Component, looks like they may have changed it to redMigrator. There is a free version, like jUpgrade you probably need to login first, but it is still free.

You can install to the same database you just need to make sure you are using a different prefix for your new tables. The old Joomla 1.5 tables defaulted to jos_ as a prefix, just check your database and see what prefix was used and used something different when installing to the database.

A better solution would be to clone your current site and install it locally using a server setup like WampServer or one of the other server setups you can download for free. With a local server you can have as many databases as you need. After you have finished the migration locally you can clone the new site and replace your old site on your Host server.

In Joomla 1.5 you can use the Akeeba Backup extension to create a backup of your site. Use the backup file to clone your site on your local server. You will need to go to Akeeba's site to get the 1.5 version of the extension.
