So Now I gotta upgrade.

Post by NABSA » Mon Jan 20, 2014 12:21 am

I just took over a Small Club site to help out. www.nabsa.org
V 1.5.18
I'm looking through the upgrade instructions at: http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_fr ... 5x_version

It says to "Verify the download using the MD5 hash listed in the right column on the same line as the package you selected."
I know what to look for, but what do I verify it against?
I downloaded a file but cannot find any matching MD5 Hash in any files or anywhere to verify.

If I got the right files, do I have to use an SSH Terminal or Cpanel to unpack?
Can't I just unpack locally and upload using FTP and run the install?

Then there is the v2.5 upgrade to deal with.

This site is hosted by Blue Host and they say they will turn the site off soon if not upgraded.

Thanks in advance.

http://docs.joomla.org/How_to_determine ... e_checksum <--
You can find more info on the MD5 stuff above, but its not necessary to worry about matching the hashes to upgrade Joomla 1.5.x tbh.

Make sure you backup files and database before you upgrade.

All you need to do then is download the right package file, and upload the the files via FTP.
Unpack locally, and upload using FTP, yes.

Joomla make it sound more complicated than it really is..

To verify the hash of the file you downloaded you create a hash of the file after you download it then compare that hash against the actual hash of the file you found. I use MD5Check but there are other free programs to do MD5 hashes.

Yes you can FTP the files to the root of your site and they will overwrite the matching files on your site and the update will be done. Use SSH if you are worried about FTP sniffing. I have always just FTP'd the files.

Be sure to backup your site files and database, the database is not altered but good practice. If someone edited any of the core files that are being updated those modifications will be lost. Of course it is recommended to not modify core files but sometimes it is done by admins.

Also be sure to do the flash patch to the site to help block attacks.

Thanks guys.
Why don't they just say to create an MD5 Hash of the "FILE NAME" to verify against the hash to the right"

Damn programmers and engineers do not know how to talk to normal people.
PS: I did program for a while so I know. :)
