Hi,

Seems that my hosting company gave me a solution my chmoding a /tmp folder to 777. He told me to change it back to 755 once everything is set up and running.

Hi All

My problem was that the configuration.php file was owned by Apache and not a Joomla username. I fixed it by renaming the configuration.php file on the server to configurationxxx.php and uploading a clean configuration.php file from my local machine with all the settings that I wanted. That fixed it for me, hope this helps someone else out of the morass ;)

Problem solved.

Have any of you changed browsers when uploading?

I get all these errors when using Safari and Firefox.

But no errors when using IE.

Makes me wonder.

You could try checking your FTP root directory in the FTP config. I tried accessing the FTP site with an FTP client and found that I didn't actually need the root directory, I was actually there already - so I was specifying an invalid root dir!

I also went nuts on the CHMODs too though.

One more recommendation I left out.

Who is the group owner for your web site. Mine is 'apache'

Most Joomla components, on install, want to create folder/directories and have to have write priviledges to do so. If the web server (for me 'apache') is not the group owner then it defaults to the everyone priviledge. Generally, everyone does not have write priviledges. So, if the web server cannot create or write, it makes sense that the owership is the problem.

Here is how I solved my install/uninstall issues.

0. Using the current owner of the web site 'abcd' (for example) and 'apache' (for example) as the group httpd runs under.

1. Inside the web sites root html folder (for Centos it is public_html) change the owership and group ownership
find . -type d -exec chown abcd:apache {} \;
find . -type d -exec chown abcd:apache {} \;
One for file one for directory, just to be precise.

2. Then concentrate on the files permissions for installation and configuring
find . -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \;
Again, one for file and one for directory permission.

3. You may have to manually clean up where Joomla install/uninstall failed the components/plugins, before trying to re-install through the Global interface. This is where a lot of grief exists. The legacy files and lack of configuration can linger and corrupt any new attemtps on installation.

4. When complete, lock up the permissions with

find . -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

And probably locking configuration.php with 640, if you are paranoid.

Hope this helps.

I, like many of you, also encountered this problem and wasted an inordinate amount of time trying to solve it.

I solved it by doing two things:

1. Changed Global Configuration-->Server-->Path to temp-folder: to /tmp
2. Changed "Enabled FTP" to No

I hope this helps.

I have had this issue and the resolution - for me - was to define the server's FTP Root in FTP e.g. "public_html" settings using the CMS. It would seem that this can not be left blank. In order to write to the config file I made sure to enter the FTP user information and save first. Good Luck!

I had the same problem JFTP: Bad Response, couldn't move file. I followed the instruction by "Scoffers" and disabled the FTP settings from the control panel and everything worked fine.

Thanks Scoffers

Hi,

I've got the same "Bad Response" error as everyone else when FTP is enabled, but when I disable FTP (safe mode is off), i get the following error when trying to install a template (uploading images also doesn't work):

JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Unable to create destination
Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/tmp/php_upload/phpb0Ym3m) is not within the allowed path(s) in /home/<path to site>/public/www/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 344
Unable to find install package

When I look at phpinfo(), it has
upload_tmp_dir set to "/tmp/php_upload"
and "/tmp/php_upload" is not in the open_basedir variable

However, the template does get uploaded to the tmp directory set in Joomla (/home/<path to site>/public/www/tmp)

Is Joomla trying to access the template file from /tmp/php_upload when its actually in the Joomla tmp directory? Or could someone more knowledgeable explain it for me?

UPDATE: Found out my host should have upload_tmp_dir set to /home/<path to site>/tmp instead of /tmp/php_upload - hopefully this will fix the problem

cheers,
MrDuck

:eek:
For me the solution to this was highly unexpected and it just about drove me nuts figuring it out. I checked the control panel on my web host and my maximum file limit was reached. this may be something you should check if you are getting permissions issues/issues with the installation of extensions

I thought I have understand how to chmod but thanks for that, iamthezio you find it out for me. I didn't know the fonction chown and that will help for sure.

My safe mode always stayed off during my problem :
Message Jftp :: bad response ....
And unable or disable the ftp layer did not change a thing.

So it was just a question of priviledges on folder and on files for me.
Just a thing, iamthezio, you wrote twice the same command . There's a f and not a d in the second command. But never mind ;-)
1. Inside the web sites root html folder (for Centos it is public_html) change the owership and group ownership
find . -type d -exec chown abcd:apache {} \;
find . -type d -exec chown abcd:apache {} \;
One for file one for directory, just to be precise.
My config
debian gnu/linux, apache2, mysql-server-5.0,PHP5,PHP5-mysql,proftpd...

Hope this help a part of us

My host solved all my JFTP error problems by finding the bug that was making FTP not work for me in Joomla.

He has posted the fix here:

Just had to solve this one for myself...
Turned out that I had run out of space on the server for the site I was getting the error on.
I allocated 100mb space onto the site and the problem went away.

Cheers,

Ok, i had this problem, so what i did was; disable ftp ini the cinfiguration file

i then uploaded the file and installed, it didn't work, it said 'failed to copy blah blah blah'. So whichever folder it said failed to copy to, i changed the permissions to '777' and then installed it again (it should just overwrite any files it previously uploaded) and then i had an installation success :D:D:D which is new to me lol

well i had this problem and i tryed everything that everyone has mentioned and nothing worked. but when i uploaded joomla, i used kickstart.php to quickly install it. So as a test i created another folder and manually uploaded joomla, which took a while (got a bite to eat) and when i came back it was there and after the install set-up everything worked perfectly. i dunno why it works now, i mean i've used kickstart before, but maybe it has something to do with the httpaccess thing. i dunno, i'm not to smart about this stuff.

Ok, no sure if that issue is solved, sorry no time to read all posts... my answer is:

- I got the same problem with the FTP on and trying to install components, modules, and so.
- My error is when trying to move file.
- I've tried all the configs for ftp (hostname, 127.0.0.1, on, off) with same result.

Solution:

- With the ftp on and whatever working config there.
- The problem is not the FTP... the file uploads ok, but when trying to move after unzip, fails. So the problem is with the tmp definition.

- In the config, tmp section i had /home/myhostname/www/tmp thats from my hosting documentation, my 'real' home dir ... but its false... so i tried with "/usr/home/myhostame/www/tmp" and WORKS!

i tried to put /usr/ before the path 'cause is a usual phisical path in linux...and seems to work.

now the compontent installs perfect

Hope this help! sorry no much time now!

Cheers

Ramon

Ok so I've read slot of post concerning this and I tried what you mentioned. But it didn't work. One I think it's because of my server being setup differently. And two, I used a php program to unzip everything for me on the server.

However I did hear that with some servers you have to manuelly load joonla up. So I did. Took a while, but it worked. Why, I dunno.

But thanks for the help.

Ok, um components are not uploaded through FTP like the joomla core program. Components, plug-in's, and modules are installed after joonla is setup. Consult the faqs or consult the joomla documentation for details on how to install add ons.

At first, I didn't have any problems with a clean 1.5.9 install. I decided to do a new install with 1.5.10 last week (same server and account), but ran into this useless JFTP... error message. The fix mentioned in the link below worked for me 100%. I hope the devs can take a look at it, and if possible, also come up with less cryptic error messages.

Kudos to Robert M. Morley for going out of his way to fix this kind of issue for a customer. That's pretty impressive customer service!

I tried to follow your instructions but I am having difficulty.

My path to tmp is: /home/xxxx/public_html/tmp

When I try to switch FTP from YES to NO, I get this:
An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file to write!
I tried to CHMOD the configuration.php to 777 (from 644) and then try to change it, and still get the same error. So I can't even switch the FTP to No.

This all started happening to me when I upgraded to J1.5.10

I can't do anything and now my client can't upload any files and he's not very happy with me!

JFIDLER --- you solved it for me, thanks SO MUCH!

One thing I would say is that I left my FTP host as: 127.0.0.1 but put in my own user / password. So it worked for me with FTP on.

This is how I got it to work. I found it was an absolute path issue in the "Path to Temp-folder" settings.

1. Set configuration.php to chmod 777 using instructions from the previous posts. I'm not sure if this was necessary or not. Also it is worth mentioning that the previous posts instruct me to change the Enable FTP setting to "No." I forgot to set this and kept it to default "yes" and my solution still worked.

2. Created a new php file in the root directory of my site. Copy and paste this code this script...

<?php
echo getcwd();
?>

Then upload, and test the file. You should get an absolute path that looks something like this...

/hsphere/local/home/sitename/sitename.com

3. In the Joomla Administration back-end, clicked on Site > Global Configuration.
4. Clicked on the Server Tab.
4. In the Server Settings > Path to Temp-folder field, by default it is set to /tmp. Append the absolute path you found earlier to this string. Example: /hsphere/local/home/sitename/sitename.com/tmp.

Then I had no problem uploading and installing an extension. Hope this helps someone!
