Setting up Security?

I am new to Joomla, so please forgive me if this is obvious.  I am trying to setup a Joomla site where users will have access to different pages of the site based upon their user account.  The site is for a community where the general public will have access to some information, registered users will have access to much more, and select users will have access to a "private" section of the site.

Can anybody provide me with a pointer as to how to set this up?

If it is like the older version of joomla.

You will need to change the content to who can view it, by what permision..

EG:  Public, Registered,

Public = Anyone
Registered = Registered Users...

The problem is, I need public, registered, and then Group A, Group B, and Group C which may have additional permissions to view specific content items that registered users will not.

I havent had the need to set this up my self. but there are solution out there.

Please be more specific so someone else can help.

You are using Joomla 1.5RC4? or a different version of Joomla?
