Long iniital load times for Joomla site

Post by seajohn » Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:39 pm

Using Joomla 1.5, I've noticed that if my site doesn't get visited for several hours, then the first time I visit it, it takes anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds before the site starts loading. (Right now, I'm the only one visiting it). This happens regardless of what computer or browser I'm using, and whether I try from home or work (different ISPs).

I ran the site through pingdom.com, and it shows that it takes all of this time (15 to 45 seconds) before the first byte of data is sent from my site. Once the first byte is received, then the rest of the site loads in less than a second. After this initial long delay, I can revisit the site and it loads almost instantly. (This subsequent fast load happens even if I restart the browser or use a different browser). If I wait several hours and try again, then it's back to the long load time at the first visit.

After fighting with this for a couple of weeks, I totally deleted my site and reinstalled Joomla, so now my site just consists of the default Joomla site. I still get the same long delay.

Is this a common property of Joomla, or is this caused by my webhost? Do other Joomla sites have this issue?

What have you done to trouble shoot this issue already?

Have you seen: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=428&t=272708 and http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/ (HISA) among other tools to help us help you.

Re: Long iniital load times for Joomla site

All I've done so far is to totally delete my site (which was minimal) and Joomla installation and then reinstall Joomla 1.5 through my web host's Fantastico script. That didn't help.

My issue is trying to figure out if the long load time is something inherent to Joomla, or if my web host has some issue. I don't mind changing web hosts if there is one which doesn't have this issue.

If you look at http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/?url=http: ... &save=true
you can see how long the site has taken to load over the past couple of days.

Once again, the long load time only occurs when the site hasn't been visited for several hours.

Here is the output of the script.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Problem Description:
Site takes a long time (over 16 seconds) to begin sending data to the host

So, I'm guessing that people whose sites get a decent amount of traffic don't see this issue, while those who don't have much traffic do...

I'm wondering if I could set up a chron job to tickle my site once an hour to get around this problem. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I'll try it.

Seems nobody is bothered about neither of our threads, kind of dissapointing for a support forum with such a vast member base.

Any updates? I am hoping that you get a resolution soon, because I have the same problem on Ipower. To muddy the waters on whether it is a Joomla or Ipower issue, they sent me a notice saying that I have to pay $12 for installing Joomla. I have to ask myself why does Ipower has hate (charges extra) for Joomla.

That's my thread, you can see what i've already done.

Fact is, we've both come here for support and we've given info that people have asked us and no one seems to be helping.

I appreciate nothing can be done instantly but it seems it's just all being overlooked.

Sorry for my tone, but I just want this sorted.

Re: Long iniital load times for Joomla site

I added a cron job to download http://www.mysite.ws/index.php every 15 minutes. That seems to have helped quite a bit. Since doing that I've only had one time when the download took longer than 10 seconds to get the entire site; previously I was seeing at least 15 seconds just to see the first byte of the site!

So, I still don't know what the root cause for the long load times is. I'm guessing it's due to Joomla loading up a bunch of stuff at its first invocation; I guess it all gets cached at that point but after a few hours the cache gets dumped. How to fix this or if it is fixable, I don't know.

However, I think this solution will let me get around it until I get enough traffic to the site to eliminate the problem.

I am running into the same problem with joomla 1.5.1. Pages wont load frontend. seems like sql problem. using unix, php5, joomla 1.5.1. I just launch the site yesterday, and no one is on my site and I still can't get my page to load. Also using networksolutions. However, my admin backend loads fine without a problem so that was kinda odd.

yeah, I am going to upgrade to 1.5.2 to see if this problem can be fixed. I noticed it is only when SEF is on, when SEF is off everything loads fine. For some reason, it is having trouble pulling the data from the database and it throws me a 503 error " Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later"

I just went live yesterday and it took over 4 hours to ftp all the files to the webserver (over 11,000 files). I tested everything on localserver before going live and everything was working correctly. All the specs are the same, except the php version networksolution provides is a newer version so that shouldn't be a problem. It would be great if I can just fix the problem. it just seems like the database is having trouble pulling the SEF urls. Also, this seems to be a 1.5.1 bug because it is happening to a lot of people regardless of the host.

Here is my new performance report using1.5.2, nothing has change. pages still won't load when SEF is ON. a bug. This is a bug in 1.5.2. A tracker should be reported. If someone can post this bug, that would be great:

Ok thanks. just to let people know who are using networksolutions, I called the support and they open a ticket for me to investigate in this issue. Obviously people here who are using networksolutions are having problems when SEF is on. I will post a resolution here if there is a resolution. If not, I will migrate to godaddy.com and hopefully, that will sove my problems.

ok. do you think all of us should call networksolutions since there are a lot of people here with the same problem at network? Just so they would really investigate. I noticed that SQLI (for network) is not on and it should be on. I have previously test on localserver and everything works so I am going to have them match my php.info on my localserver.

I am actually at work, I left my reference number at home. I will PM you when I get home. If you can call first, and let them know that it is the database issue, most likely it is the php setting. I noticed the "SQLI" is off, which it should be on. There are other settings I would need to discuess with them also. it is a networksoultion problem because everyone is having the same problem when the SEF is on.

Here problem solved. For people who are using Networksolutions, you have to use .htaccess for them or else their PHP will not support the server. So, in global configuration, mod-rewrite, SEF have to be on. To speed up your server, go to your phpmyadmin, optimize all your tables. for large tables, do it one at the time. I might have to migrate to independent server later since, if optimize your tables in phpmyadmin doesn't work, there is nothing they can do. To actually get more experienced Tech support in the US and not offshore tech support (bad experience with them), you have to call the main number, get the domain renewal department, and make sure they get you a tech support from the US or else, your problem will not be solved for another 2-3 days.

Also Chuck, my reference number actually didn't even help. I had to go through tech support here and they helped me solve the problem. I upgraded to 1.5.2. That should solve the problem.
