Upload/download gallery with user permisions

Hi all, I'm a Newbie to Joomla but so impressed so far!
I want to ask for general advice on the best components/modules to enable me to create an image gallery.
The gallery must enable users to log in and upload their images with the choice to share these images with either registered users or anyone.
Sounds simple but as a newbie I am still a little overwhelmed by the amount of solutions presented to me.
