Simple Product Catalog needed - no virtuemart

Post by sentiao » Tue Sep 04, 2007 6:19 pm

Dear fellow joomla fans,

I'm looking for a simple product catalog. It's not required to have a shopping cart system or any system at all to handle orders, just a product catalog. Of course it's no problem if it has more than that, as long as it's not virtuemart.

I want to use it in such a way that a friend of me can use it on his site (he has very limited computer knowledge). Can anyone help me / advice me?

Thanks for your time reading  :)

Thanks for the reply  ;D.
But... I've already come across this extension, I read not so positive things about it.
Ofcourse many times people only leave a comment if they're unsatisfied with something, how is your experience with it? =]
I also just heard VirtueMart has a gallery-only function, can anyone reply to this as to how easy to use virtuemart is in gallery-only mode (for lesser techheads)?

Thanks :)

Edit: I'm trying out ProductBook. It seems that all the negative replies where posted in between 2 dates given by the developer that he uploaded as a wrong release. So that resets my expectations, I'll post my experience later on.

Using ProductBook permanently now. It's been smooth for me so far, it's simply working great.
I can advice this extension to everyone seeking a simple product catalog with no ordering or shopping cart requirements.

I usually use the blog layout and use the articles as "products". Works fine in most cases. Look for example at http://www.torkelson.se/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=14

I had struggle to make my page looks like yours. The problem is, i don't know how to create the thumbnail image on the "browse product" page. When the user select to one of the product, the thumbnail image is still there because i put the thumbnail image into the top of the article before i put "read more" function.. I am quite new in this. Could u please give step-by-step tutorial to do the page like http://www.torkelson.se/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=14

Thank you

In the article view: Set Parameters Advanced: Intro text: Hide

Then you do not see the intro when you click into the page.

Menu type - category blog layout.
Then you can set the look in the parameters to the right in the menu view.

Ok. But I need the following category structure:

- Products
----- General
----- Something
---------- sub
---------- sub
----- Something more

etc...

Only this isn't possible in the category manager. So i made a section called products and made categories under that section. Then I used the Section Blog layout, but i don't know how to show only a image instead of the full articles.

Unfortunately theres no way using subcategories in Joomla. I have solved that by place all categories at the same level. Then I use the menu manager for placing category blog layouts below so they seemes to be sub categories. Section blog layout does not do what I want.

If you are looking for a simple good product catalog I recommend you trying Product Catalog Builder. It's a tool for creation of electronic product catalogs. Easy to build and maintain. This catalog can be printed or exported to any supported format. You can also distribute it on CD.

This example is exactly what I would like to do for a client. I get most of it to work but I can't seem to get my products to layout like yours. Even after changing parameters I can't get a similar layout. I would like to have 3 columns. Thanks.

In what way does It not look like in torkelson.se? In menu manager you can set the number of columns.

I can't get multiple columns to flow across page...they will only go down no matter which parameters I change. And how to you specify how much you want to show up in browse page(you have a thumbnail, some information, and then a link). I would like mine to look much the same. Thanks for your help and quick reply.

Everything I put in the first text-box shows in the browse page. Then I set the hide intro parameter for the content Item. In the menu manager I set the columns. Maybe your column problem depends on the template?

What do you mean by text-box? Do you have your content item in tables? Thanks for your help. I contacted the template maker and they are helping also. Great advice! Thanks again.

I meant the text area/editor where you put the article content. I use no tables.

Hello all,

thanx for this really nice post, that's also what I'm looking for.
I know this thread is a bit old but I have another question
please kalby, if you're still there, could you tell me how you manage to specify the width of the columns?
I have my thumbnails just as you explained in columns but the space between the pictures is too big.
Plus it's hard to get everything aligned

all the pages that discribe products are articles. So you have to create all the articles.

On the top of each article, put a small image (the one you want to appear on the first page) and some text if you wish, then put a "read more".

Check the settings of the menu (like "main menu" and chose the one where you want the images to appear (like "home") set the settings with "text introduction : hide" also hide the article titles, section titles and category titles and all icon titles.
in Basic settings, set
# Principal : 0
# Intro : (number of thumbnails you want on the page)
Colonnes : number of columns you want
# links : same as Intro ( I don't know what it is for..) :p

set the type "articles of a section in blog"

I am trying this method for a site, but wanted the description image and title to be hyperlinked. I also didn't want the read me to show.

I modified these files to get it to work.

components/com_content/views/section/tmpl/blog.php

components/com_content/views/section/tmpl/blog_item.php

I used the link from the "read more" and put it around the image and title areas.

Are you guys kidding me!? I've been looking ages for a "simple product catalog" plugin/extention for 1.5, but the only way to do it is using blog layouts??

Am I looking in the wrong places?

I strongly recommend the K2 extension, it's free and it supports nested categories.. not only that but it includes a catalog layout for doing what you want.

Also with the power of html overrides, each category in K2 can have it's own template .. we used K2 to build a very extensive online parts catalog for one of our clients.

You can check it out here .. http://www.laddinc.com/our-products/online-catalog.html

We used a separate category structure and a different custom htm override theme to create their datasheets section as well .. http://www.laddinc.com/our-products/pro ... heets.html

It's quite powerful and extremely easy to customize .. We use K2 in every single Joomla system we set up these days..

And just to clarify, K2 is basically a replacement for the sections/categories/articles system within Joomla, it does away with sections and allows you to create a category structure that supports unlimited nesting. Articles are called "items" .. it supports article comments, file attachments and images..

When you're editing an "item" it's just like being on the Joomla article editor page except you have far more options available to you ..

It also has a joomla article import function that will re-create your structure and pull in all the items for you.. Sections become top level categories, and categories are nested under as they should be.

You can check it out at http://www.getk2.org ( and no we're in no way affiliated, we just love it )
