Email to post

Post by kniaz » Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:49 am

Hi,

I have been searching far and wide for an extension that can take an incoming email message and convert it into site posting? Does anyone know of one or ever heard of anyone using one? And if it had an ability to support multiple users - accept incoming email message and based on some criteria post the message with the sender as the article author, that would be ideal.

I have what I need developed in ASP, but now that I am trying to convert to Joomla, this is the only stumbling block.

Appreciate any guidance on this anyone can provide..

Thank you!

I have not heard of such a thing for joomla, however there are many many extensions. Have you browsed through them and not found what you need?

If you haven't then I would suggest looking at hiring a PHP developer (specifically a Joomla Developer) to create this component for you if you are not familiar with PHP and Joomla Framework yourself. You post a request for one here.

Well, whatever the proper terminology for "experienced" is, thank you! I might have to play around with that one.

Any news on this topic? Is there a new plugin to allow submit articles to Joomla via email?

Thanks.

I too am interested in hearing more about the solution here as I'd like to use it on a current project.

I have tried a multitude of options within Joomla but none work. The only thing I have figured out that actually works with ease is to utilize an install of Wordpress to post by mail and auto-import via the Feed Gator Component into Joomla content.

Thanks, Dave. I overlooked that when perusing the unlikely category the other day for a completely different extension.

Now in Joomla community we have professional solutions to make this possible like wordpress aggregator pro in example, but attention - this is not tool only to post, this is powerfull Seo tool.

Good news - New version of "Post by email" can post on Jomsocial walls, in Kunena and in Agora.

This is excellent! I very much wanted to use Agora on a new site that I'm developing but the old set for the original website is a little tricky and I was tempted to try and use a phpbb bridge with m2f somehow running.

The old site which contains a forum and mailing list is set up in a rather complex fashion to accommodate users in very low bandwidth areas (28.8 and lower) who can't get on to the web, and must interact by email with the forum. The old one is set up a follows:

Functionality
  • Users can post/reply on the web in phpbb3 or from an email client
    Users can read all posts on the web in phpbb3 or in their email (settings) - with attachments (not links to download them)
    All posts are human moderated prior to showing on forum or being disseminated by email
    Content is RTF / HTML with attachments etc
    Currently about 1500 subscribers
Setup
Phpbb3 = web forum
Listserv = Moderation
M2F (mail2forum) = link between the two

This schematic shows a simplified flow of data:

Assuming that I can heist the output of Forum Submit button and email it to my listserv address for moderation and dissemination, presumably, I can use EmailToPost the same way that the old setup was using M2F outside of Joomla, but with Agora instead of PhPBB to feed posts back into the forums? I wish that there was a one does all package out there but as far as I can tell, nothing really performs at level of the current setup on the site that I'm porting to Joomla -- hence the interest in this post and Module.
