Different Content Types (available solutions)

Post by Amagdy » Thu Aug 21, 2008 10:28 am

Hi All,

The topic started as a request from more experienced Joomla! developers for recommending a solution/component which expands the com_content Joomla! core component and make adding different kinds of content with different fields possible. As no response received I decided to make it as a preview for the available solutions as I had to study them all to pick the best solution for the project I'm working on, will make sure to update the topic and present my point of view.

Problem:
other than submitting Article with only the standard article field, we needed to add extra fields (i.e. teaser, description, link ..etc) for different content types (i.e. News, Articles, ..etc). the combination of fields will create a different content types:

Content Type: Knowledge Article (teaser, category, full article, keywords ..etc)
Content Type: News Item (teaser, news item, keywords ..etc)
Content Type: Event (title, description, date, cost ..etc)

Also, we need to create a landing page for each content type, and group content by country

Potential Solutions:

1. Creating Custom Components for each content type:

>>that's a lot of components and of course you'll need to develop plug-ins for searching and modules for displaying content in different ways.

2. Hacking com_content component:

adding the extra fields (allow null in the db) and using a JavaScript/CSS hack to hide/show fields according to the content type
>> Hacking the core is always difficult and not efficient in the next upgrade to Joomla! you may need to modify your hack. that's the most unprofessional solution with sustainability issues. but sometimes there is no other solution than using hacks

3. JoomSuite Content:

JoomSuite Content: http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/
>> Looking so good, It adds the required functionality but away from the com_content way of doing things. so you'll need other JoomSuite components and may be develop your own plug-ins to handle content by country and different content landing pages (Resource: Bcontent site below) + current users' comments express more problems with needing support for ionCube PHP Encoder.

4. BContent:

BContent : http://www.bohacek.de/b01-joomla-blog/b ... -beta.html
>> Sounds great, but under-development and not ready for production purposes

5. Jxtended Catalog:
Jxtended Catalog: http://jxtended.com/products/catalog.html

6. Pages & Items:
Pages & Items: http://www.joomlapi.com/pages-and-items/

7. Google Summer Code; Extended Component:

Content Type Management: http://developer.joomla.org/gsoc2008/co ... ement.html
>> cool, but not fully ready yet (to be updated)

8. Google Summer Code; Custom Content Layouts:

Custom Content Layout: http://developer.joomla.org/gsoc2008/cu ... youts.html
>> Looks nice, but still under-development (to be updated)

You're welcome to share your experience, thoughts and points of view!

Kind Regards,
Abdo

are there any news on this ?
May be some new components are released to resolve custom content issue ?

I've personally tried Page and Items. Basically it works in terms of creating custom content types. However I need frontend submission to be available to my registered users to submit that custom content I've created through Pages and Items.

What about other extensions like: Bcontent, Jxtended Catalog, Custom Content Layouts ? Did someone succeed with these components ?

no plugin needed, just the component and the module.
Read this in the Pages-and-Items configuration on tab 'new item':
To make a new item (text) from the frontend make a link to the following url, where 888 is the page/menu id. So first make a link, click apply to see the id, then replace 888 with the id and save again.
index.php?option=com_pi_pages_and_items&task=item&sub_task=new&Itemid=888

To make a link where a user can select any of the itemtypes:
index.php?option=com_pi_pages_and_items&task=item_type_select&Itemid=888

To make a link to a specific itemtype, use the url underneath. Replace 'html' with the itemtype-name (see pi-configuration > itemtypes).
index.php?option=com_pi_pages_and_items&task=item&sub_task=new&pageId=888&item_type=html
and in config > general, select the box at "Use Pages-and-Items for frontend editting".

I hope that helps ;)
