need help with update

a little background info: i'm a freelance php developer trying to understand the structure of joomla

right now i'm working with joomla version 1.0.13 Stable, and i'm trying to make change the location of the latest blog entries (provided by the MyBlog extension). if this was a smaller scale php site, i would pretty much be switching where the mysql query is executed and then displayed.

my question is where is the php-friendly (if it exists) area of the code where i can manually switch things around? i hope that makes sense, thanks.
