Probably those keywords which have high search volumes and low competition so that you can be ranked on those keywords easily. It could be short-KW or long-tail ones. Long-tails have usually low search volumes and also low competition. It is quite easy to get ranked on long-tail KW.

Keywords for your business are those jargons which are related to your business. That people will type on google search engine to get to know you or your products.

What exactly do you mean by engaging content? Some domains can't write engaging content yet they are ranked first on google and are socially shared more. These concept is a little weak. A food business online, can't write a blog on movies that are more socially shared.

However, one can choose a different type of content for it use. A video for instance can be a good engagement product on social media where the online food guy, describes a dish and how it is made.

Choosing the correct content type is also very important. You don't need to write everytime to get ranked on Google. Videos, pictures, gifs are also taken into account by google for ranking purpose.

With Google continuously changing the rules it's impossible to be totally up to date on what works and what does not. One simple need to write good content that is correct spelling and grammar with a well laid out and fast website that is totally mobile accessible.
You cannot depend on your content being found on its own! You need to tell people it's there, in whatever means you can from traditional advertising to social media. When you have a following sure post they will come but if you do have a following you need to build one to get there.
The internet is great for placing articles/blogs etc quickly and relatively easy to do. But that's not all it takes.
It actually takes work to have people looking at your content. There is no quick way to make it work as so many think there is.

Engaging content is meant for social media sharing.

Ranking on Google is primarily based on text/keywords along with linkbuilding.

If you have engaging / well written / interesting content on your website - and all related to the topic of your website, people might be on your website for a longer time, which probably would help you climb the ladder on google :)

On the long term SEO is the way to go, but dont underestimate the power of social media.

If you can get a fanbase for your homepage and continues to deliver great content on the social media, preferably a few times a week, you can generate massive traffic.

Some businesses/webshops runs entirely on the social media traffic.

I know from my country, that there are dusins of art galleries that dont spend a dollar on SEO, but do a lot of great social media work. In this line of business (artworks, paintings etc) they take a nice picture every day of one the paintings and put on the social media. The painting get a lot of likes, which drags people to the webshop.
