Need legal advice on setting up a free resources page

Post by JoomIa-Shark » Sat Apr 25, 2015 1:51 pm

Hi,

I'd like to set up a page on my website dedicated to free resources for web design (ie. icons, fonts, and anything else I come across that I think would be beneficial to me and others).

Obviously there will be some copyright restrictions, and I wouldn't be able put the downloads directly on my website, nor would I be able to promote anything that is pirated.

But if I merely posted links to the external download pages, would this be completely legal?

Thanks

And yet you came here instead of getting a lawyer 9.9 :)

I can't afford a lawyer! Haha.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't have thought there'd be any issues with merely posting links to external websites that offer free fonts and icons, etc - so long as the downloads were legally owned by the sites that were providing them.

I just wanted confirmation on this though before I go ahead and build the page.

There should not be any problem linking to other sites. Even if they knowingly link to pirated content. As long as you don't link directly to pirated content or your web site is not only linking to sites with pirated content you should be fine. Worst that could happen is that you would get asked to remove a link.

That would very much depend on the country you and your web site are in.

Are there any, that enforce a stronger policy than the above? I know that there are some stupid laws like the EU cookie law, but are they enforced anywhere?

Yeah, that is linking directly to pirated material. This guy is worried about linking to sites/pages that then link to pirated content. I don't think that is a problem.

I would never encourage or being neutral on these forums creating a site linking to sites who knowingly propose pirated stuff. Period.
