Define a custom format dd.mm.yy

e.g. (for Office 365 Excel) - click the cells with the dates contained in them, then under "Number" tab on the menu ribbon, choose "More Number Formats".

Then in the dialogue, choose "Custom", then in the right hand side in the field under "Type", define the format, literally typing DD.MM.YY (or dd.mm.yy - doesn't matter which).

This will be saved in the list. Click OK out of the dialogue, the cells selected which had the dates like 01/01/2017, should be changed to 01.01.17. They will still be recognised as dates.

e.g. if you do a formula 31.01.17 - 01.01.17 you get a result of 30 as in the date range is 30 days.

You need to use "Number" / "Custom" as you can't define it specifically as a "Date" format.

If you need other Excel help suggest you approach specific Microsoft forums for this software.
