progressive web app - how to?

Post by joit » Tue Feb 07, 2017 5:08 pm

Hi,

there's some talk about Chrome's progressive web app feature
https://developers.google.com/web/progressive-web-apps/
https://developers.google.com/web/progr ... /checklist

One must have is the service worker
https://developers.google.com/web/tools ... ice-worker
https://jakearchibald.com/2014/offline-cookbook/

Is this something that can be achieved with Joomla?

Thanks
Hannes

it seems like not many have considered this. I think it would be a great value for websites to be used offline.
I searched for it a lot but I couldn't find any more usage with Joomla. Has anybody had more success?

Have done some extensive searching. Found several PWA service companies. Also, Wordpress has a plugin for PWA. However, total absence of anything tangible that would integrate with Joomla as an extension. Perhaps one of the upper tier extension developers could look at this concept and create one for Joomla. Hopefully!

We have cranked out several non-Joomla PWA websites that work wonderfully on mobile devices, albeit somewhat limited because Apple does not yet support PWA in the Safari browser. Hopefully, their billion-dollar-cash-on-hand light bulb will come on and they will support it.

Android/Chrome now supports PWA.

Platform of choice for use is Webflow to build the app; then build the PWA using "Cacheman" to generate the manifest files.

I made some research and compiled this brief guide: viewtopic.php?f=715&t=957080
It's absolutely doable to convert a Joomla website to PWA without having to pay a monthly fee, you can also integrate unlimited push notifications almost free of charge with OneSignal.

correct me if i am wrong but your "completely doable" guide is not . you yourself in the article with the misleading title state
oloccina wrote: let me begin by saying that the following guide IS NOT working completely in my case (for some reason I cannot get the service worker to register on my site, but that's probably because I am not a developer and I am missing something important).

With that being said, the following steps are probably the best to follow if you want to convert your website to PW!

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone in the community has gotten a Joomla PWA to work or knows of any technology in the wings to assist with this.

Thanks, SL

There is now a PWA extension available, but we have not had sufficient time available to test it.

We are going to do our install/testing of the extension later this month. Heading out on a brief vacation, so no time to devote to it. Let us know how you get along if you don't mind. Thanks.
