Useful List of Freeware?

I'm fairly new to Joomla and the whole website thing as a whole so I've been having a few issues here and there.

I came across this https://www.bestvpn.com/best-free-utilities/ list of firmware the other day and I saw a few interesting things on there. Since it recommends Malwarebytes and Bitdefender, which I already use, I would like to think it's a fairly decent list but I'd like to ask the following:

Is Chrome the best browser to use for previews and building Joomla sites or should I use something else?

Does anyone have experience with CoffeeCup http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/ and is it useful?

Is FileZilla still the best FTP client? It seems fairly outdated and not very modern so not sure if it's the best one to use.

All the top browsers are fine for viewing your work. In fact, you should have all browsers installed to ensure your development works in all. And if yu really want to make sure it's all good, you also need to test on all popular OS and devices.

Filezilla is still quite useful. It's not doing anything special, simply connecting to FTP to facilitate file transfer.

There are numerous device emulator add-ons available for Chrome and Firefox browsers. With those you can test as if using the actual device.

No that is not correct. A very popular FTP-client is Filezilla however (!) Filezilla stores the passwords used in plain text and does not encrypt or password protect them. This way your passwords are accessible when your computer is compromised and your site is easy accessible through FTP with the passwords gathered.

I always suggest people to use FTP-clients such as "Cuteftp-pro" and equivalent that encrypt and protect passwords.

As much as the discussion about "freeware" tools might help people write HTML or copy files between their webserver and their PC (or perhaps defend their computer files from viruses and such-like) may be interesting to some people, the discussion is completely inappropriate in the context of Joomla or how to use Joomla's core features. Bear in mind that one of the main attractions for Joomla is that you don't need to write HTML or use file copying software.

Yes, we can discuss whether to use CoffeeMate™ or TeaCup HTML editors, whether to use FileGodzilla or CarrierPigeonFTP to shift data packets up and down the ether (by the way, I still use Telex machines to send data to my webservers) but, in the context of what's useful for people who are "fairly new to Joomla", it's my humble belief that these discussions are off-topic in this "General Questions/New to Joomla 3.x" forum category and would be more suited to "The Lounge".

I've lost track of the number of tools (some free, some that I've paid for) that I use in my webcraft. I don't have any favourites except, perhaps, for Firebug and Firefox. If you're serious about taking up webcraft as a business then you need to equip yourself with the tools of the profession (which means, a range of browsers, of different viewing devices, knowledge of the black arts in visual and non-visual presentation of content, etc.).

Actually nowadays most of the browsers are friendly for developments tasks like Joomla. So if you want to use Joomla CMS 3 or more then you should make sure this version-
Internet Explorer 8 or above
Firefox 13 and near
Safari 5.1 or near
Latest version of Chrome
Opera 11.6
Yandex 14.10 or near

I think both browsers are user-friendly for Joomla CMS. But remember MS windows safari 6 may not compatibility for Joomla and you should use Native safari. I don’t have enough idea about the coffee cup but I am using FileZilla for my ftp server and I recommend FileZilla and honestly, it’s simply best.

There is no best browser. Chrome is good, and Firefox is good. Opera is good, and many others have their preference for a certain browser.

It is, but a bit older in the tooth than FileZilla.
Why don't you have a look at Sublime Text?

I use Gimp image editor all of the time. It's an amazing free software package for editing images. I also use inkscape for vector graphics. It's also freeware.
