Isn't it time to rid the dual password and email fields for registration?

All significant websites that require registration, have ditched the old dual field steps and returned to single fields for email and password. It is a bother for many users and seems pointless. It has never deterred any spammer.

It's time for Joomla to rid those excessive fields. The method is way outdated.

Use a plugin to modify registration form.

I will keep this short: I like the idea that users are required to enter the password and email address twice. The need to confirm the information—by entering the data twice—has nothing to do with "deterring" spam users. The approach taken by [unnamed] "significant" websites doesn't mean that Joomla has to follow them.

Here's a visual reference to clarify.

Having to install a third party extension defeats the purpose. I am suggesting that this should be core method.

So I reduced the registration fields and genuine member conversion rates have increased significantly. It also eliminated the automated bots that created usernames as mikeGS and now simply uses the email address as the username. I added a method which auto deletes user accounts that are not activated within 24 hours of registration and sends an email notice to the person to let them know of the deletion.

Joomla should at least include options to do this configuration. Users just don't want to be bothered with any type of captcha or fields which seem unnecessary and cause abandonment.

For what it's worth, confirm email field has been removed in 4.0. The same should happen to confirm password field because password field now has hide/show toggler.
