Upgrading MySQL to Maria DB in WHM/cPanel

Post by immaculate » Tue Feb 26, 2019 7:00 am

Joomla! users that are running their own servers on WHM/cPanel may be getting warnings, as of the most recent upgrade to version 78.0.12, that MySQL 5.5 is, in future, no longer going to be supported.
The recommendation is to upgrade to MariaDB 10.3, although upgrades to MySQL 5.6 & 5.7 or Maria DB 10.0, 10.1 & 10.2 are also possible.
However, the "MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade" interface in WHM warns that "Upgrades to new major releases... are more involved because there is a substantial risk of data loss"
Can anyone from the Joomla! development team advise what the ramifications are in performing this upgrade and, if possible, post a guide on doing so, please?

Take a snap-shot of the server. Then you can roll back if the upgrade fail.

PS. You will probably get better answers in forums that deals with this, such as stackoverflow.

Thanks for your reply.

PS. I'm asking as a Joomla! user, not as a cPanel user, which is why I started off my question "Joomla! users"...

Joomla does not run with MySQL 8. 5.7 is OK

Same situation. I have roughly 35 Joomla sites on a server running mysql 5.6 and I'm being encouraged to upgrade to mariadb 10.3

I'm nervous as to what kind of impact this will have on the 35 Joomla sites, if any.
Some info I find says go to mysql 5.7 and call her good. And then some tells warnings that it's easier to go to mariadb from mysql5.5 or 5.6 then it is 5.7+

What to do, what to do?

Doesn't your host offer Snapshots?
Take a snapshot before upgradading. If it goes wrong, you can then roll back.

Snapshots are available but only for VPS servers. And I do have full nightly backups, but to restore the whole server would be a very time consuming task if there were issues.

The fact that theres no much comforting discussion on this mariadb upgrade makes me wonder even more. It's almost as if no one is doing it.

MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL. There should be no issues with running Joomla sites. If you manage the server yourself, you might need to update some configurations (e.g. my.cnf).
