Thinking about removing my forum... however

Post by Ironside » Thu Apr 04, 2019 11:19 pm

I'm seriously contemplating removing my forum because it's gone so quiet in the last three years. Having said that, I do still get quite a lot of people coming from the search engines. That's one of the reasons why I've kept the forum in place even though hardly anybody uses it nowadays. However, I want to change my platform and it looks as a the forum has to go. I know for a fact that when the forum does go Google will continue to index information contained within the forum. If they do click on a link that points to my forum but obviously is not going to go anywhere. I am hoping there is something I can do so if somebody does click on one of these obsolete links may still arrive at my home page. Even though they wouldn't find the specific forum information they are looking for at least I'll get them to my website were hopefully very will find what they looking for in one of my articles.

Assuming the forum isn't costing you any more to have than not have, why remove it?

You are not the only one who have experienced drop in forum activity.

You have to moderate it while it's been kept open. An option is to disable the ability to post and keep it as an archive.

or use an htaccess redirect

Code: Select all

Redirect 301 /forumurl/* /
Should (given that your Forum menu item is a top level menu item) redirect any forum url to your default menu item. You could create an Article saying the forum no longer exists blah, blah, blah etc. If the menu item for that Article was called forum message then

Code: Select all

Redirect 301 /forumurl/* /forum-message
or /forum-message.html if your urls end in .html.

Try it out see if that works for you.

I decided to have complete radical change and move my sites over to WordPress. I'm not going to bother running a forum that nobody bothers to use. The amount of money I actually make through AdSense from the forum just doesn't make it worthwhile. The articles on the other hand do make some money for me and therefore I want to concentrate on creating a WordPress website with a completely different layout. In the last year or so I've lost interest in websites because I'm bored with Joomla!. I don't mean to sound ungrateful or rude but that is just the way it is. I took a closer look at WordPress this week and it sparked my interest in website creation. I think it well give me more opportunity to mess around with different designs and formats.

Anyway, I'll see if I can get any web queries looking for forum information redirected to my homepage.

if I'm understanding properly if somebody does a search on Google and comes across a link to a message on the forum the code you have provided will redirect them to my homepage after they have clicks on the link? After all, I will be completely removing all the information regarding the forum.

Doing a 301 redirect will cause Google to remove the pages from the index. The consequence will be that clients will not be taken to you site any-more when they search.

It would be good to know why you came to that decision?

If the forum no longer exists then the links will disappear from google anyway.
