You should choose the shopping cart which offers you the functionality of your idea for an ecommerce site.

First of all, decide what type of e-commerce activity do you want to perform - selling goods online, offering services to your customers or starting B2B. Most of these would be covered by popular e-commerce platforms like Shopify and Ecwid, where you can start your online store within minutes with online payments and fully functional shopping cart.
+1 for shopify. It is a bit on the expensive side though once the trail ends. WHMCS is also a great tool, but that is more for services.

Take free courses, there are paid courses as well, but I don't recommend it. Join e-commerce forum or groups in fb, some people are really kind and will help you, will answer your questions. The hardest part is choosing niche. Good luck!

As long as you have defined how it will be your distribution channel you can have a way to go for e-commerce.

I have done a few projects for e-commerce with Joomla / Virtuemart and Prestashop as well. Having defined how can be done the logistics of your product delivery (shipping, downloads, local pickup) and how will you make the transactions (PayPal, PayU, Directly, Cash on Delivery) and its commisions. Once you get such part of the management you are good to go to see how the page runs and be ready for customer support.
