Post by sozzled » Thu Dec 31, 2020 11:43 pm

Happy New Year.

What are your predictions for the Joomla project for 2021?

I have read it somewhere that-:
"Joomla 4.0 comes with a revamped admin panel developed using BootStrap 4 for the new core UI. The CMS also introduced Cassiopeia front-end templates and Atum backend templates as well as a new media manager. 4.0 also removed JQuery from the core to avoid conflicts with other libraries, rewrote the whole plugin system, simplified code and improved the platform’s SEO capabilities."

These are my predictions for 2021:

1) There will be another five releases of J! 3.9.x.

2) There will be no stable release of J! 3.10 or J! 4.0.

3) A lot more people will leave the J! project but there will be no replacements for the losses.

4) There will be no reconciliation between the developers, on one side, and the rest of us ordinary folk on the other; both sides will further isolate from one another.

Just as an aside, Bootstrap will probably be dumped from the J! CMS core but some third-party template developers will probably continue to create their products that way.

My prediction for 2021 is that negativity still won't contribute positively to the development of software and to an online community.

Another prediction of me is that Joomla 4 will be released this year and that its compliance with accessibility standards will be an important key factor for people choosing a CMS.

My prediction is that the poor menu operation of J4 admin will not be improved and will be hailed by well meaning fools as brilliant.

I cast no reflection—positively or negatively—about the project. I based my predictions on the best information available to me today and represented my statement in carefully chosen words that should not be inferred as "negativity".

I did not use a ouija board, crystal ball, tarot cards or read the stars to make my predictions. I may have used "tea leaves"—scraps of information—but my predictions are based on modelling the progress-to-date with J! 4.

The following graph shows the important milestones in the timeline of J! 4. stages:
j!4Milestones.png
The vertical axis shows five stages:
  1. Project inception: 0%
  2. First Alpha release: 25%
  3. First Beta release: 50%
  4. First Release Candidate: 75%
  5. First Stable Release: 100%
Progress towards reaching these stages is non-linear. The dotted-line shows the non-linear trend.

The horizontal axis has the dates when these milestones were reached. Starting with project inception in July 2015, the first Alpha release occurred in November 2017, the first Beta in May 2020. Assuming that the first RC version is release next month (who knows?), the dotted line shows the trajectory of the project development will result in the first Stable release occurring around Q3 of next year (2022).

If you have information to share with the community that supports this forecast then we would be grateful for it.

I agree that compliance with WCAG 2.0 will be a key factor for people choosing J! 4 as a CMS to build websites. I also agree with @Webdongle (although I would not have characterised things in the way that he did) that the user interface—especially the backend—and accessing the functionality required to build a website in J! 4 will be more important. The usability of the backend will probably be more significant that the gains made towards WCAG compliance. To that extent, yes, that's probably more of an opinion than a prediction.

WCAG 2.0 IS important but who really care at the end.... I see so many websites which must legally be wcag compliant but are not in front so for the back. I say that with accessibility training and certification. I believe in a WCAG web but what I say : it's not enough for our clients so say : WP is is a no go for us ^^ For the first time I have specific order for some WP websites because the user already know WP BO or have already some WP and don't want to learn something new. I have organize some demo but nothing is not relevant enouph in the BO for justifying J!3 because we can deliver the exact same front for J! or WP. At the end it's the client who choose not us any more ^^

And I wonder if the devs have 'lost touch' with the clients and therefore making choices that will turn the clients towards wp?

Because we works with our clients and because we listen about their needs (and not only ours) we consider WP now. We build J! websites since 13 years, we have win a lot of public contract "against" WP agencies. But reality reach us, when a prospct have already 2 WP websites or somes employee who already know how to create content with Wp/Gutemberg but love our design, obviously we are not trying to convince/convert him to J! because it will be a "tech" choice not a user friendly "choice". The only thing that is important : the capacity of the clients to create content and reach their goals all other CMS consideration is important for us not for them.

Its always have being like this for everyone for everything and thats why Joomla need different user "usability" testing & analysis. Example using analysis type Zackman framework to ask the important questions why Joomla should exist.
