Hi,

I've got Polish site and I want Polish special characters to be translated propperly from Title to Alias field in articles.

Standard behaviour of Joomla is to strip out all non-english characters.

Is there any conversion table present where I could add Title -> Alias charaters pairs to help with propper translation?

Non ASCII character in URLs just suck. Face it please. Keep technology clean and simple...

Currently joomla do transliterate latin1 nicely, but for non-latin and for latin2 you would see characters being stripped, or alias automatically with date in case it was empty.

Would suggest you to have a look at the plugin yvTransliterate and the languagepacks with transliteration tables that can be found at the download location.

My intention is not to keep non-english characters in url's but to translate them into their closest english counterpart because now they are stripped out and it makes Alias unreadable.

Thank you, but I do not want to use plugin for such a simple task.

Using a plugin is simply an easy way of getting the missing core support of translaliteration for your language. Download, install and activate.

For this socalled simple task that would be the solution for now.

For the extension yvTransliterate you can create the precise set of replacements that you prefer. The download section I referred to was the download of the extensions where you can find an example english language pack, and other Eastern European language packs that shows how you can create a Polish language pack.

Sorry, can´t help you better than this for now. But I can asure you that its a topic that we do certainly have focus at, for to strengthen the internationalization effort in the longer run.

My concern against foreign plugins is that you start to use plugin, you enjoy it and then it disappeares the next time you need to upgrade your site for next release of Joomla. It happened to me with Simple META Management plugin which blew up after my site had grown. I have to rewrite all my site content now because it is no longer supported and withdrawn form Joomla extensions page. So I prefer to use as much Joomla core native functionality as I can.

Anyway, I am surprised, that there is nothing like that in Joomla core because it is not so hard to do employing separate file(s) with translation tables for each localisation. It seams that character translation is hardcoded or simple filtering is used. It would be great to see more flexible solution in future releases of Joomla.

Sorro o2sen, it is not your fault, you did the best and tried to help me, I appreciate it.

yvTransliterate is kind of using a rocket to get from London to Glasgow. It employs XML syntax simply to assign pairs of letters to each other There are more effective and more simply ways to do this like ie ARTIO JoomSEF uses and many other applicatons of that kind use.

Morover, yvTransliterate fails when you want to translate ie from Polish to English but you have English language selected (as it is my case).

Configuring it is too complicated and not explained by author so you have to define in bilion places, that you simply want to translate character1 to charcter2

Anyway.. I gave up after several tries and found it easier to change a couple of letters manualy then struggling how to configure yvTransliterate. It is definitely not my choice for that job

This is exactly what I am trying to do regarding the Icelandic language. Could anyone point me to the right file to change this in! I am tired of having ð become e but not d.

in Joomla 1.7+ You can enable UTF characters in URL by going to:
Global setting > site setting
then activate Unicode alias .
