The best way to have a multi-language website

Post by djdany » Wed Sep 19, 2012 4:59 pm

Hello,
I have my website in English and I want to translate it to my native langiuage which is a RTL (right to left). The template I am using, already has the RTL css file and it's fine. But I am thinking about how should I make the website? Like creating a new sub domain and install the Joomla and basically start from beginning (using Akeeba backup extension)? Or use those extensions that does the job and translates the site. As it is my first time that I create a multi language website I dont know the standard and common way.

If you have any experience or opinion, please let me know.

Thanks.

You could develop multilingual sites in at least 2 ways:

(a) Language Translators using Google Translation - There are extension that are built using automatic translation provided by Google. There are several extensions that enable Google translation on the fly. Some of the extensions are

GTranslate - http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... 23/details.

BabeFish Universal Translator for 11 Languages - http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... 01/details.

Similar extensions could be found at http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... anslations.

(b) Create contents and other objects such as menu in native language - There are Multi-lingual content builders that allow you to do this. You have to create translated content for each of the languages. Some of the extensions are

Joom!Fish - http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... 60/details.

Multilang M17n - http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... 48/details.

So, if you are particular about the accuracy of the translation, you should go with the option (b) as you are doing the translation. If you are not very particular about the quality of the translated content, explore the option (a).

A 3rd option: Upgrade to Joomla 2.5 ;)
Joomla 2.5 has a built-in multi-language feature (I would add this option under imanickam's point (b).

Thank you for your responds, but all these plugins are working with one template that means, only websites with left to right languages can deal with. But I have 2 css files on the template. So when the language changes the css file switches too. So should I install a new Joomla on a new sub domain and just link them?
Any idea?

We are also looking for a solution too - a name badge home page (https://shop.unisto.com) with over 20 languages. I wonder if that's possible?
