Translation tasks
Thanks for all the enthusiasm and great work that we are seeing by our GHOP translators!
I want to make a few comments about translation tasks.
1. First, as you know, the Joomla! community is multilingual. I encourage you to look for feedback for your work in the forum for the language you are translating into. Just start a post saying that you are a GHOP student and would like to get feedback on your work.
2. I also posted in the translation work group forum inviting members to volunteer to help. If you would like help, please add a post to that thread rather than starting a lot of new threads.
3.Before submitting final work, make sure that you have at least one person (besides yourself) who is a native speaker read your work and help you with mechanical issues like grammar, spelling, word choice and so on.
4. Understand that with translation it may take us a little while to find someone to review your final submission. We're doing our best! We are thrilled and surprised at how many students we have already doing tasks.
5. Make sure you read the task carefully. The minimum task requirement is that you translate the four listed sections. Extra credit is to do the rest and/or to update the screenshots to your language.

Re: Some comments about translation tasks
It has come to our attention that the tasks involving translations of the official Joomla! Installation Manual specify that the Joomla! Electronic Documentation License should be used. This is a mistake as they will be derivative of the original which is under a Creative Commons license. We apologise for this error. Please ensure that all translations are shown as being under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Share-alike 3.0 Unported license.

Re: Some comments about translation tasks
It would be also good if participants could check with Translator of a given language if the tasks aren't translated already. For example: Polish installation manual is translated, except for some blanks in migration.
PS
I am still in the dark but hopefully I will be able to resolve it by Monday.

Re: Some comments about translation tasks
I am trying to walk through all of the tasks this weekend. Yesterday, I finished about half of them.
There are a number of points of communication that are important - making certain we understand project status and ensuring the contest stipulations are followed, providing the student feedback and assistance, ensuring they are "released" as soon as possible (so they can select another task, if desired), keeping the records straight between Google and the J! forums, documenting due dates and communicating if the date is near, etc.).
It's not been easy with the number of students we are working with but, oh so valuable because of the results these students are providing our community and because are learning how we can better engage our own community.
I am also making a list of the translations and will publish here. If a member of the translation team wants to mentor a student for their language, the way to get started with that is to post into the thread, indicating a willingness to do so.
I'll post that list, here, later today.
Thanks...Amy

Re: Some comments about translation tasks
Here is a list of our existing Installation Translation GHOP Contestants and languages.
We welcome members of the Joomla! Translation Working Group or other community members who speak these languages to help the students with these tasks by providing your guidance, proofreading and direction.
Doing so is very simple, just post into their student's thread (link is number below), introduce yourself as their mentor, and take it from there. We would appreciate keeping the conversation in the forum thread, as much as possible, for purposes of transparency and involvement of the broader community. We would also welcome your evaluation of the student's task completion, posted in the same thread.
Since the Joomla! Translation Working Group is busy preparing for RC4, amongst many other local duties, we will not likely find mentors for each task before those tasks are complete. Google allows students to participate in up to 15 tasks and be paid for that participation. Therefore, we may accept a task as complete, have the student publish the completed work on Google's website, so that they can continue with the next task, without delay. The contest is not complete until the end of January. Reviews for this work can take place later and we will still consider the evaluation of translators at that time.
We will try to keep this list up-to-date. Please contact translators if you can! If there are any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

I present a list of language coordinators. If you get no help with your translation task you might want to contact one responsible for your language. They will be glad to help you find somebody to assist you at your task. The link to send a private message is at the bottom of profile in "Additional information".
Please note that they have a lot of work right now so their answer might not be prompt.
I have already asked coordinators for language mentioned above for help.

Re: Translation tasks
Actually, we have already surpassed the 102 tasks Google initially authorized. We have offered 133 tasks. Oddly enough, at this exact moment, there are 28 tasks still open and 28 tasks complete. If you are good with math, you'll realize that means we have 77 tasks claimed and underway.
As a community, we just released Joomla! v 1.5 RC4 and hope that Joomla! v 1.5 Final is close at hand. We are stretched very thin for volunteers right now, and the GHOP team is struggling to take care of reviews, suggested revisions, testing, training, and mentoring for tasks still open. That's why we appreciate all of the community support we have had. We need help!
We are collecting ideas for tasks and are encouraging community members offer suggestions. But, we have not decided whether or not we will offer additional tasks at this time. Our first priority, is to take care of reviews for those enrolled. We have a backlog of extensions and translations and documentation that needs our attention. When we have met the need of current contestants, and if we have volunteers willing to spend time with additional contestants, then, we might offer additional tasks.
With the holidays coming up for many of us, this is going to be a time of year we need to spend with family and friends. So, don't look for new tasks for awhile. Feel free to choose from the 28 open tasks we still have available. If we decide to offer new tasks, one of the forum moderators will post in the stickies that new tasks have been added to Google.
Thanks for your interest in GHOP!

I am so glad you are interested in this contest! Take a few minutes to read the rules at Google and familiarize yourself with the contest.
There are still a number of tasks open that do not involved code. There are a couple of unit test plan tasks that I am certain you could do. Look at the other unit test plans that contestants have done (in this forum area) to see what you would be expected to do. There are also nine more tasks to build a Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization.
If you find a task that you want to do, just leave a message in the comment on the task page indicating "I claim this Task" <-- exactly like that, then we will respond in the affirmative that you claimed it. Then, create a forum thread here and get rolling.
Can't wait to see what you do!
