This is easier to read, but the red looks a little like flames.  Is this what you want?  You might want to use the other two colors from Joomla!'s logo: orange and blue, with blue on the outside so it doesn't look like flames. (but that might look like water).
Just an idea, use it if you want to.  This is art, so we can only give our interpretations and opinions, not corrections.

Well, it's not supposed to look like flames, it's just supposed to have a powerful glow. I think with any other color it wouldn't really look right. Besides, with other colors it gets harder to read. I dunno, what do others think?

Your entire picture is crisp - nice edges - precise. The spray paint looks amatuer-ish to me. The colors are not distinct enough to read the words. I think you would be better finding a nice edged background - either by making your letters larger with borders - or creating a more polished looking label for the letters to rest upon. I do not believe it will detract from the game board to do either of those.

I liked the green effect on the players.

Do you have the same colors on both sides to demonstrates togetherness? I have liked that concept for awhile.
Are you now wishing you had selected a simpler task, like rebuilding Joomla! in a different language?  ;)

You rock - you have a great way of interacting. Thanks,
Amy :)

Well, I don't think by rebuilding Joomla! in another language you mean I can rebuild it in Ruby, and since I only speak english, I couldn't do one of those tasks. ;D
Actually, the only real way I would get frustrated with the task is if I posted my piece and it took so long for people to get back to me that I ran out of time. I don't mind changing it, so long as I make it in the deadline XD If I was so adamant to do it my way, it would take me about 3 months, and I would do it one little pixel at a time XD

As for the green-ish tint that was in previous versions, I merely forgot to put it back in, thank you for reminding me XD.

The colors are the same on both sides to show how an Open source project such as Joomla! can work even when the contributors are from all over the plave, and to how how a community does not necessarily have to be physically adjacent to one another to work.

As soon as I have a chance I'll come up with a new one. Once again, I am now in the middle of working on some of my other projects so I have to wait until I get stuck in that one to move back to this one XD. I'll probably have another one later tonight.

Wow, I go away for two days and all of a sudden there are three pages of messages!

In regards to logo guidelines, they have to be very strict, or you end up with so many 'styles' and variations it looks like  different logo.  The guidelines have to be strict enough to keep continuity, and  flexible enough to allow it to be used in different situations.

What you have now looks good now though.

Making text readable on a background without stuffing up the background is also a challenge.  One trick I found that works quite well, is instead of 'covering up' the background with another colour, is to actually fade out the background, so that way its not so strong, and it actually enhances the writing then.
Its also still very easy to still see what the background is supposed to be as its not 'covered up'.

Have you thought about fading out the black squares to grey (and do it gradually so the middle rows are lighter and the top and bottom rows that have the chess pieces on them and normal)  that way you can still see the whole thing is a chess board.  To further highlight the writing, you could put say a yellow glow/boarder around the letters....    then it could also look like the 'glow' from the letters has faded out the chess board in the middle.

Its an idea, probably explained very confusingly  haha...

Hey Marty!

We had a little fun during your short absence!  :P

Actually, it's coming along very nicely and I could not be more impressed with DeM0nFiRe's ability to work with a community, and to adapt his ideas and still express himself artistically.

Very good stuff!

Alrighty, I took your advice marty and this is what I have now. I also re-arranged the positioning of some things to fit with the new coloring scheme on the board.

I think that looks much better, but the transparency is a 'tad too pronounced. This is especially evident in gap between the "acrosss the board or across the world" and "We are One" lines.

Yeah, I personally like the way I did the fade out, because it looks almost as if that's the light being cast from the same source that causes the shadow. Anyone else seeing that?

Yeah!!  Is there any way you can make more of a fade on the left side and less on the right, so that it looks even more like the light source?

I love the idea of the light source. Perhaps you might want to explore how/if it effects the shadows.
I'd still like see the version where you tried to make it look more like a light source.

What program are you using?  Gimp has a lighting manager built into it that you may want to explore (if you haven't already)

Yes, I am using GIMP. I can make it look like a light source, I just don't think that the light source looks good.

love how that shading so coming along.

I am wondering what it would look like with that light source type shading, and making the light look like it was coming from the joomla logo.  Does it look good if you put the logo in the white square at the start of the row its already in, and then move the 'we are one' across a bit?

Umm, I can try it, but I have a few concerns:

1. That may be putting the logo in font of too 'busy' a background

2. The Primary Partition of my hard drive failed today, so I lost all the data from this project, including some pieces that I did not post here. That will make it difficult to go backwards, but I suppose I can see what I can do with the data I can drag from here.

If the light is bright enough, you may be able to make the logo larger, as the whole thing would be white because of the intensity of the light.
The Primary Partition of my hard drive failed today,
I'm sorry to hear that. :'(  What a way to start out a new year.  Look on the bright side: you will probably be paranoid about not backing your computer up enough in the future. (errr... maybe that isn't such a good thing) :-\

I have been burned so many times that I FINALLY do backups first, before I ever do anything else (of consequence.)

But, at 46, I've had a few years of experience getting burned before that message really got burned in.

DeM0nFiRe - give me the scoop. What does this mean to your project? How far does this set you back? My heart is breaking for you; this is most unfortunate and must be VERY discouraging.

Well, it will make it a little difficult to finish under the deadline. I may be able to salvage enough from this thread to finish in time. If you want to help me, the best way to help would be to reply to my questions and posted works as quickly as possible so I know what to fix as soon as I can.

DeM0nFiRe -

We will certainly work with you on the deadline as long as you are continuing to interact, as you have been.

As far as "quick response", I must tell you, you are getting the best response time and interaction out of any of our contestants. As I look back over the past month, there was one sketch between Dec 5 and 16th, then you had a long absence until the 27th. Since the 27th, you've had sometimes more than 10 responses a day. We are unlikely to respond more quickly than that!  ;)

Continue to work with the community and respond and interact and you will have no trouble with deadlines. You are doing great!

Amy :)

Ok, here's what I've got now after taking an old version from here and modifying it. I've not yet added teh cream color, but if this layout is no good I'd rather not waste teh little time I have left on the colors.

Wow! Another way to handle that logo and stay inside of the guidelines - very creative!

I think the "We are One" is tough to read, but you also said you weren't done with color. But, it might be worth moving up or down to avoid splitting the letters.

But, I will now bow out and let more artist voices speak. You were well served by those working with you.

You are not in danger of any time constraint with us. You have been working wonderfully with the community and we can ask for no more than that. You've allowed others to share in your work, strong community approaches.

Thank you!

Oh, this looks cool!!!  I'd go with it!  I really like the fact that the Joomla! logo is not confined to a small little square.
Just make sure you change the direction of the shadows of the pieces on the left.

If you didn't tell me, I wouldn't know you lost your work.  Great job!!
