098 - Write a document describing how to store data in the session...

Post by _Daniel_ » Sun Dec 30, 2007 2:42 am

98 — Write a document describing how to store data in the session between page loads.

Hi everyone, I'm Daniel from the Google contest. I live in Mountain View, CA, a short bike ride away from the Google HQ. This is my first exposure to the Joomla! CMS, but I have some background with PHP (see e.g. this or this), so I think I'm prepared for the task ahead. :)

I've been studying the session handling scripts for the past few hours, and although the comments are a bit sparse, everything is beautifully organized and cleanly integrated. I guess the next step will be to set myself up a testbed and play around with the features a bit. I'll probably have more questions later on, but here are a few for now:
  • What markup format should the final document be written in?
  • Should I discuss the differences between sessions and cookies, or would that be veering too far off topic?
Cordially,
Daniel

Very impressive! How fortunate for us!

We prefer Oo - an .odt file, if possible.

I'll "tap" Chris Davenport, Joomla! lead of documentation, to see if he can guide you on the particulars of this task.

Thanks for choosing to participate with Joomla!. Can't wait to see what you are able to accomplish.

Amy :)

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for taking this task on.

As Amy has said, OpenOffice Write (.odt) is our preferred format, although we will accept others (eg. HTML or MediaWiki markup) if you prefer.  Basically, it has to be something that the documentation team can a) maintain and b) convert to other formats if required.

Whenever you write anything it's always a good idea to start by thinking about your target audience.  Who are they?  What do they already know?  For this task the audience is likely to be developers, but you don't know what their level of expertise or knowledge is going to be.  We haven't specified that in the task description because we don't know either.  So I think it's a good idea to go through some background information which will help beginners get up to speed, but which can be skipped by more knowledgeable readers.  This is where headings are really useful.  They enable readers to quickly scan a document and start reading at the point that is best for them.

Good luck with the contest!  :)

Regards,
Chris.

Thanks, Amy and Chris! All is going well so far, though I still have plenty to do. A lot of the storage techniques are new to me. One question: would it be possible to get an extension if needed, or is the time limit strict?

We like for the contestants to share their work, as they go along, or at least check in with us every few days. Then, it's really not a problem if the task runs longer because we know it's being worked on. So, keep that in mind - stay in touch - share your work - ask questions - and we'll do great!

Thanks for the update,
Amy :)

I'm sorry, but I think I'll have to withdraw. The past two weeks have been unexpectedly turbulent, and I don't think I'll be able to finish soon.
