081 - Create a document entitled "How to use YAML to create a Joomla! v 1.5

Post by drmmr763 » Sun Jan 20, 2008 11:26 pm

Hello Joomla! people. I'm back again, sadly, this will probably be my last task, as I doubt there will be time for me to claim another one by the time this one is complete.

I have claimed task 081. I think its one of those tasks that no one was touching. I was actually very scared to try and do this task since I still don't have a very clear picture of what I'm going to have to do. So, I will probably be asking for a tad bit of help on this. (as much as I hate to!)

http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... tail?id=81

So, I do have a few questions:

1) What is YAML?
Lol. I don't have a clue. Is it a Joomla! 1.5 "thing"? I did do some googling but all I could find was this: http://www.yaml.org/ and I almost hope that isn't related.

2) What do you mean by 'Use the Flexible Grids template'
I am going to assume this means using the flexible width template function in rhuk Milkyway....if anyone cares to clarify, that'd be great.

I'll get rolling on this as soon as I can!

Thanks again to all you great people for making this contest possible!

lol! Yea - the site you found is *not* the right one - pretty cryptic, huh?
81 Create a document entitled "How to use YAML to create a Joomla! v 1.5 template" documentation

You must be in the template mood!  8)

Yaml is waaaay cool. It gives you beautifully constructed xHTML and CSS for templates - all tested with various browsers, all ready for action. What is needed is the Joomla! markup.

Here's how I would approach this. YAML has lots of different templates. I picked this one, the Flexible Grids template out, because I thought it might be a pretty good fit for our sample data.
  • Take the Milkyway template and the Flexible Grids template;
  • Figure out where the modules and the header and the component and footer and breadcrumbs should go.
  • Explain how to add the Joomla! markup to the Flexible Grids template so that it can be used to replace the Milkyway with the sample configuration.
  • Then, show how to package a template into a zip file.
  • Then, show how to install it.
In doing so, you take the beginners you helped with your last documentation to the next level. And, you open up a rich, diverse and more unique set of templates for their use.

People have been staying away from this task. It's not the easiest task. But, mainly, it was reserved for the right person. Glad you have it. It is going to be HUGELY powerful.

Thanks! Let me know if you have questions.
Amy :)

Lol. Ya think!? I hope that when I'm done with all the template stuff I'll actually know enough to maybe develop one myself from scratch. (been trying to figure out how do that for months!)

So now I think I've got this. Basically, I'm converting a YAML template to a Joomla template? Sounds like a fun ride.

Dear Joomlans:

I am sad to come to you with this post. I had hoped that it would be one that I'd never have to write. Looking at the size and the skills required by this task, I feel that I don't have enough coding background or skills to complete it. I've spent several hours reviewing code and reading different tutorials but I still cannot entirely grasp this project fully.

So, it is with a heavy heart, that I feel I must reject this task. Perhaps if after the contest this task has not been claimed I'll still spend some time working on doing this task anyway.

Chad -

I am not worried - I am confident we can get thru this together, honest.

If you really prefer not to, that's cool. But, if you are worried about not getting it, don't be.

I am 100% okay, either way, your call - I respect whatever choice you make.

Amy :)

I look at the amount of coding involved and feel that its beyond my current grasp of knowledge. I'm sorry!

Thanks much!
