Support for Facebook Connect and OpenSocial

Post by Ruppert » Mon Aug 18, 2008 2:36 pm

Hi,

Facebook has recently released FaceBook Connect to seamlessly connect Facebook accounts with other sites:

Image

Joomla already supports a level of integration with Facebook via Chalet's JoomlaFacebook extension. Still, it appears that the integration level offered by Facebook Connect is tighter and more familiar to users, since it uses Ajax popups on the remote site. Facebook Connect's sample application gives an idea of what can be achieved.

The idea would be update Chalet's JoomlaFacebook to add support for Facebook Connect's new php libraries and demonstrate the new functionalities offered by Facebook Connect. Or, at least, to add a new authentication plugin to Joomla to support Facebook Connect logins.

The same could be done to support OpenSocial (a common API for social applications across multiple websites) which would then add support for the following social networks to Joomla: Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, MySpace, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING.

Image

Thanks,

Ruppert

Seems like Shannon Quinn has already taken up the task of integrating OpenSocial with Joomla using Shindig!

Seems like someone is posting Joomla/Facebook Connect integration as a freelance job:
I need of a plugin that will integrate Facebook Connect to Joomla, allowing users to use their Facebook accounts or create new user accounts on my site.

I would also like users to be able to upload photos to our site and it be displayed on their FB feed via FaceBook connect, and for them to able to import their albums to our site from their current facebook galleries. Tags and Comments are a must on our site as well, and importing current tags and comments would be a plus, tho I am not sure it is possible.
from http://www.scriptlance.com/projects/1219026502.shtml

Hope they contribute it back to the community 8)

There seems to be some interest in getting Community Builder to support Facebook Connect. Not much progress though...

Haven't seen much going on with regards to Facebook Connect.

Seems like Shannon Quinn's OpenSocial integration project is dead now...

A shame really since support for social network integration seems like a key feature for Joomla to have.

Shouldn't be a problem no. The facebook plugin works fine with php5. I tried it. You're missing something else.

What's on line 292 and its vicinity in your facebookapi_php4_restlib.php? Have the files been properly transfered via ftp?

Are there any updates on this? It looks like the scriptlance project completed for $200. Does anyone know if the guy is selling this or offering it for free? $200 doesn't seem to bad...

Haven't checked for any activity on this topic lately, but I was disappointed that OpenID 2.0 wasn't included in Joomla 1.5.8 as initially announced.

I think OpenID 2.0 is required for the likes of registering hotmail, gmail and yahoo users. Would be a great addition to Joomla registration process.

Just found out about http://rpxnow.com. RPX plays the role of intermediary between social networks and Joomla. You'd just need to implement a RPX authentication plugin for Joomla and you could allow users to register via OpenID, google, facebook etc...

It also forwards user info such as emails, birthdays etc... back to Joomla, which is nice. However, it's payware: basic system is free, then for more features it's $9/month and up.
RPX makes it easy to add OpenID based single-sign-on and its family of protocols on your website. We help you accept user sign in from providers like Yahoo! and AOL, making it extremely simple for users to get in and start using your web application. It runs on our servers in the cloud and is accessed via simple, restful API calls. RPX is a proxy between your website and the OpenID provider, and is completely transparent to the end user. The service looks like this from a very high level:
Image

OpenID authentication, Simple Registration, and HCard profile data are all available through the RPX API. Adding RPX to your website doesn't require any changes to your database, and its only requirements are the ability for your servers to make outbound HTTPS calls and to parse JSON or XML. If you are adding OpenID to an existing web application, RPX can also help you enable OpenID for your existing users with our mapping API.

You'd just need to implement a RPX authentication plugin for Joomla
And how difficult is that?

Hey quick question. Does facebook connect allow user to pull down content from their facebook profile like photos, events etc. to the third party website or is it against facebook T&C. I have read the documentation but din't find any mention about this issue, maybe I missed something.

Rex's API seems pretty straightforward and well documented. I reckon you'd need to take the Joomla's existing OpenID authentication plugin and do a mashup to support the Rex API. You'd have to support the ability to deal with and store various user fields such as birthdays etc which will vary depending on which authentication provider is chosen by the user.

honestly, I would rather see facebook's API used for a real facebook plugin, rather than some janky Rex crap. But thats just me...

:D Great

That will be perfect...

Just have to think about features then?

We should use Facebook API?

Seamless integration regarding login?

Then in Joomla invite users from Facebook?

Uppdates from Joomla content into Facebook?

Userlist?

Who's online? Both ways?

Users from FAcebook into Joomla userdatabas?

CB integration maby?

I'm not shore about al this but just to start of with?

First off, I'd take Chalet's JoomlaFacebook extension and build on that.

* You'd need to update the default Joomla plugin to allow for facebook login, like OpenID authentication plugin already does. I think that's key.

* Some way of allowing users who have registered with Joomla via your JoomlaFacebook app from Facebook to link their account to their existing Joomla one. Otherwise, they have to re-register via Facebook to use the facebook functionality and without having access to their existing accounts.

* A updated list of all facebook/joomla users that are Facebook friends with the current user

* Are you planning on integrating with Facebook Connect or with the standard Facebook API?

* Is this for a commercial product or open source? Any idea of your timeline?

I was going to suggest looking into the Joominviter plugin, but I just realized that Nonte is the one who created it.

My two cents are that any Joomla Facebook integration should include Jom Social. It is the most Facebook like community component in Joomla.
