Free promotional site for UK business

Post by johnny73 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 1:44 pm

Hi,

My site is a free promotional site for UK business.

If you visited the site you will notice I'm using the JAPurity template.

I deliberately stayed within the look and layout of the standard joomla family. No fancy css or coding. Not my strong suit and why invite issues down the road.

I've chosen to use software which is in development and current.

The front page hosts a directory with sobi2 software. This was the only affordable solution to hold 1.6 million records. Cache is set to on and the speed is ok considering I haven't optimized mysql etc.

To allow for customers to submit business blogs and articles I am using idoblog. This software also syndicates content etc.

For feeds and display of news I'm using RSS Factory Pro. Just installed this the other day and the convert to standard content feature is going to save me a lot of time.

Link exchange is important and I'm using the only decent software available from JV-LinkExchanger.

For backing up the site it has to be joomlapack. It can handle a site upto 2gb in size and gives me security.

Sitemap generation is through Softplus GSiteCrawler (sql version) and will be able to go up to 2gb. This is important as i have a lot of urls.

When choosing extensions where possible I've stayed with 1.5 native and also products which are in development.

Any feed back would be appreciated. Please be kind.

Hi,

Had a quick look at your site and it seems like a good start. A few comments though:

- The Google Ads look a bit unbalanced with the different sizes either side of the page. Maybe try a different advertising programme on the left side with an Ad the same as the Google on the right - Try Amazon Associates or Bidvertiser for example.
- The Web Links section at the bottom of the page seems to be off-centre - slightly to the left.
- Newly published links is a bit lost at the bottom of the page, how about putting it in a module nearer the top to one side?

Hope this helps

Your site looks empty with almost empty left and right column. Try to make use of those empty space.

Thank you for your comments. Can't really remember what the site looked like at the time you posted your responses. I'm sure you were all correct. Since then have made some major changes. Have moved to the stable release of japurity2 and created a dedicated homepage instead of the previous directory page. Upon viewing the site I know you are going to say it needs colour. I'm going to add some after another template update or two. Ads now appear at the top of the site, on the right, and centrally within some content items. Personally I'm happy with this. I don't think it's too intrusive. The site is also free and needs to pay for itself in some way.
To find the answer...do some work.

If your site requires ad income, I would encourage you to look more closely at alternative methods of advertising than google as well... I'm not saying get rid of google, but there are different services that advertise in different ways, and you may find some value in them.

As for the styling, I find the main page too white. I would suggest using a module class suffix if supported for that template to give them some different style/colour and/or give your google ads a grey background like the header bar to end the wall of white on the right...
