Hi I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to install cms_realty via the install from directory method, but I get the please enter a package directory error message also. Can anyone help?

Alright,

To me it seemed i made a stupid noob action and never realised the consequences of it.

After i installed Joomla and everything on it i renamed my folder where i installed joomla in.
( example: renamed "joomla364" to "joomla 111")

I never realised i had to go into my configuration and change the foldername accordingly.
After that i checked in the extension field and the global configuration if it was set to the correct foldername and after that all was well and the install was fine.

So it was a question of backtracking my own steps!

I hope this is helpful for others. Enjoy!

I got this too and found out that I have to specify the full directory e.g.:
/homepages/pqwer123456/joomla/install
where /homepages/pqwer123456/ is taken from my domain info at the provider's configuration page, joomla is my installation directory and install where the package files are extracted to.

After trying everything written here to solve the exact problem I did this simple trick:
in Extension Manager: Install from Directory field where it is /public_html change that to your full home root eg. "/home/o28723/public_html/tmp". Changing that in configuration.php did not help me at all. Just when you install from directory you put that full url it works. I updated from Joomla! 2.5.26 to Joomla 2.5.27 with this trick.

e.g

Configuration path/sitename/tmp

C:\inetpub\vhosts/Sitename/tmp
