remove joomla URL category id and article id

Post by rich1 » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:49 am

The scenario Joomla 1.5.x:
Search Engine Friendly URLs : Yes
Use Apache mod_rewrite: Yes
Add suffix to URLs: No
.htaccess enabled!

I wish to remove the category id and article id from my Joomla SEF URL's.
I will be only adding categories to the menu, except for the odd link.
On other sites I have simply added each article to a hidden menu, which gets rid of the category id and article id.
For the new Blog if I am to write say 10 articles a day that would amount to an extra hour or so of extra organization.
I simply wish these articles to be published via the menu categories without the category id and article id appearing in the URL.
As this is a new Blog I wish to solve this problem prior to Search Engine caching as I would be in a situation where I am creating all sort of 301 redirects if I do not solve this prior to publishing.

Surely there is a simple entry that can be used in htaccess that would get rid of these ID's.

I do not want to use third part extensions as, in the past, these have caused more problems than they are worth. Third Party SEF extensions have resulted in so much time and effort to fix when broken it is easier to simply publish to a hidden menu.

The only extensions I use in relation to SEF are XMap, (sitemap) and ReDJ (redirecting old html static pages to new joomla installation).

Besides the one extension that was recommended in the past, HP Router, has been unpublished:
This extension has been unpublished for the following reason:

I must admit I thought this a little too difficult for the Joomla Guru's to fix.
However I did get a solution here:

While your article is OK as a description of the inbuilt joomla SEF for novice users, (I take it you are relatively new to web design), the link does in no way explain how to use .htaccess to alter the SEF URLs so they do not show menu links that are category links with ID's in the SEF URL's.

So in effect, the link is useless.

Incidentally since Joomla 1.6, web.config.txt is included in the installation in place of .htaccess.txt for Microsoft IIS

Hi Rich

These links are not working :(
Any idea how this can be resolved?

Although your link is useful, it does not actually give any information as to how to use htaccess to modify the articles to be published via a category menu without the category id and article id appearing in the URL.

@Abcplumb
It seems that as Joomla in their infinite wisdom decided to get rid if 1.5 all together that all those that contributed to extensions for 1.5 are now starting to remove them from circulation.
Why is a mystery, as many still prefer 1.5 to the 2.5 and 3 joomla versions and will still use 1.5.

However what has happened with joomlager.de is they have updated the site and therefore the URLs have moved.
Unfortunately they did not use a redirect plugin, so I found the new URLs and posted in the above Winfoes Forum Thread as Joomla no longer support 1.5.

Hi Rich1

Thanks for that.
I added the plug-in and it wiped my pages, I know it had something to do with my alias but I couldn't figure it out.
My site is very basic, I have one article for each menu. The only reason I wanted to remove the id was for the links page.
