Duplicate content or something like that

Post by Afgcric » Mon Oct 31, 2011 6:16 am

Hi Folks,

I'm very new at SEO, I have got a question on what I would call duplicate content. Can someone please tell me what to do with these kind of stuff?

Samples
http://www.afgcric.com/about-us/item/10 ... aming.html

http://www.afgcric.com/news/item/105-ic ... aming.html

Both linking to the same article, however, the first one totally misplaced.

the same goes for my front-page, http://www.afgcric.com/ and http://www.afgcric.com/index.php

I also have blank pages as these:
http://www.afgcric.com/live/gtopics.php?pid=88
http://www.afgcric.com/live/gtopics.php?pid=93
http://www.afgcric.com/live/gthreads.php?sid=104

Shall I just delete the ones I don not want in RSSeo? currently I've unpublished some of them

Yes... All are duplicate pages. Duplication nothing but same content in different pages in different websites or same website.

You must restrict all the duplicate pages through robots.txt file.

And coming to the index.php page, You must redirect this page to home page. 301 redirect will helps to solve this problem.

Other all duplicates pages should restrict through robots.txt. Track your website status through Webmaster tools.

"You must restrict all the duplicate pages through robots.txt file. "

How is this done ? :)

is it ok for index.php to have the same meta des. key-words and title as my homepage?....

I use K2 for my content, and add tags to every article.
I get pages like this: news/itemlist/tag/WCL Division One.html, which I assume is okay. but this one isn't our-service/itemlist/tag/Hamid Hassan.html

why the heck does it display my tag under "our service"

Thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

Complete robots.txt file information in Joomla Here - http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2094635

Redirect index.php to main domain. It should be redirect single page.

I dont have any idea about K2. I am using sh404SEF for meta data adding.

Think about why same page listing under two categories. If you created choose the right category and delete the other one. If you want to display same page in two categories, then change the link path.

Thanks a lot, I hope I've understood it now,
The reason behind the duplicates I guess is that I didn't understand the SEO very well and have used different strategies. I started with Sh404sef, but it didn't work well, as it caused lots of bugs on the page. I then changed to core seo with "html" at the end of every url and without.

As written above I've removed the html from the end of every URL by changing "Add suffix to URLs" in Global Confiq. of Joomla from "yes" to "no".

Google and others have links to my site which ends with html, and they off course show 404 now that I've changed it. I'll redirect every and each of them, which will solve the problem.

But will it also solve my problem for the future, or shall I use the bellow command in robots.txt ?

Disallow: *.htm
Disallow: *.htm$

you should use 301 redirect to redirect a directory to another
in this way you can get benefit of backlinks for the old directory

I'll redirect all the back-links found on this page,
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/se ... mo=d&bwm=i

If i put the bellow commands in robots.txt, will it prevent my search-engines from showing the html links?

Disallow: *.htm
Disallow: *.htm$

yes, but you will get lot of errors in webmaster tools, you can ignore these errors and nothing is wrong
yet 301 redirect is the best sollution

I have 301 redirected all the links http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/se ... mo=d&bwm=i

The rest I guess I don't need redirected as they only appear on Google search and by time they'll probably get replaced with the new urls.

Webmester tool has lots of these,

""/index.php?/Afgcric-News/News/Kabir-Khan-resigns.html
/index.php?/Kabir-Khan-resigns.html
/index.php?/Kabir-Khan-resigns.html?print=1&tmpl=component
/news/item/84-kabir-khan-resigns.html
/news/item/84-kabir-khan-resigns.html?tmpl=component&print=1"

Shall i focus on them, or will they disappear ?

you have no need to focus on these errors
they will disappear after a while

good luck
