Trends and Templates

Post by JacquesR » Wed Jan 27, 2010 2:06 pm

Softpedia® recently concluded a three part editorial on the Top Web Trends for 2010 where they "discussed, analyzed and presented some of the rising general trends taking place in web-based sectors."

Joomla! also received a mention there under Do-it-yourself Applications.

Which of these trends do you see as having the most influence on Joomla itself; on the web sites you design, develop or support, and the technology or tools you use?

More specific to Joomla, and templates: Are you making use of template clubs, or do you code templates from scratch?
Do you have a basic template you use, or do you perhaps use and on-line template generator, or off-line software? (no affiliate links please! ;) )

What's the buzz on template frameworks for Joomla?

....and will IE6 still haunt us throughout 2010 ! :pop

Interesting topic.

When I first started with Joomla I went for the big fancy templates with all the features and then I learned to code them from scratch.

Now after learning more about performance and usability I have standardized on small and fast templates like Bolt from Alledia and Afterburner from Rockettheme.

My first standard was Bolt but now I find myself using Afterburner much more. They are both clean and simple and can easily be improved with a quality logo and header.

Google phasing out support for IE 6 will certainly help!

@ eskwire: It seems that many web developers are opting for building op (or adapting) templates like the ones you mentioned.

I see that RocketTheme also reasently released a free and GPL template callerd Quasar, that is built with the new Gantry Framework 2.0
Andy Miller also announced in December 2009, that they:
will release this core Gantry template and framework freely as a 100% GPL project. This means that you will soon be able to download and build on Gantry just as we build our own RocketTheme Joomla templates.
AmyStephen also made mention elsewhere of a September 2008 article (tutorial) by Arno Zijlstra in the Joomla! Community Magazine where he shared "a standard plain package" (template) that helps with "speedy and custom" web site development.

FYI - there's a similar discussion going on in the comments of the blog post "Template Clubs vs Custom Joomla Templates" (published Jan 31) by Robert Vining: http://www.robertswebdesign.com/blog/we ... lates.html

"... these are not predictions, but only a summary of major trends..."
Well, read the article and though it leaves me wondering whose 'trend-meter'
is being used I don't see much that is really apropos to joomla. But since I took the
time to read the story, I figure I'll comment on it.

"More specific to Joomla, and templates: Are you making use of template clubs, or do you code templates from scratch?"

After looking closely dozens of templates from numerous theme-houses, I've
come to appreciate the breadth of designers and the range of products;
specially the availability of free ones. I've recently designed my own
(http://sandbox.dluz.com/Cms/joomla/) experimental template that I hope
to eventually compat-test and make OSS.
But the contributor base is what makes this webapp so useful and I hope they all
succeed. I recommend JoomlaBear and these others to potential clients.
There are a few templates I've installed that took me in the design direction I prefer; I like elasticity.

So what else is web related?
"More Flash than Ever and More Control over Flash Apps"
not too big an issue as flash will (hopefully) die off and Adobe migrates its tools to HTML5

"More JavaScript, AJAX"
welcome to high-hopesville. I expect webOS may find its place, but limiting the discussion
to 80/443; web-coding has grown so organically juicy in its 15 years (despite the bitching)
its maturing makes possible the shift from reading/static to sharing/dynamic;
from a magazine/publisher paradigm that morphed into social places capable of rendering
content-neutral media-rich applications whose style and presentation, look-n-feel, is
fully user-controlled. Ajax will be everywhere in web2.0 - a foregone conclusion;
Jquery will dominate the scriptosphere much like joomla does the CMS one.

The bigger question is how the joomla API will grow/evolve to harness more
lower-level components. I'm learning to like Ext and Processing and have even spent
some time with Cocoa. ( Have to admit that Objective-J scares me just on name alone:)
I hope that incorporating other, perhaps more powerful frameworks and libraries
into future Joomla would allow devs to create more interesting extensions that work from them.

"HTML5 & CSS3 Tutorials Will Flood the Web"
More choice are always better than less, even if it means sifting through more chafe.

Other trend comments:
Touch Technology -> N/A w/o discussing the devices the display is on and
not too relevant to the www; touch, pinch, click, scroll is more WM centric than UA.

Do-it-yourself Applications -> Bring 'em on:)
Ruby Closing the Gap on PHP -> I understand the appeal from that camp
but believe it won't happen before python does same. Rb and
gems is a dog to get working right from my humble typo experience; and I'm
loathe to run >1 webserver per host - so it would have to get its own domU
adding some more overhead.

Online Work Gets More Profitable -> Odd they didn't specifically mention
telework getting more acceptable, but from my 1st-hand experience with
all mentioned sites save jobster, pay is lower (helo developing world),
generally as is basic end-user satisfaction; but low-balling is still the norm.
I get a lot of my work from frustrated jobbers.

Cloud Computing -> will continue to work for fortune 1000, research universities,
government out-sourced datafarms, etc.. Will not work too well for
joedokes and his rackspace website(s). YMMV

Silverlight Continues Growth -> My hope is that SL finds a peaceful rest so
I can forget anything and everything about mono, moonlight and MS itself.
Let them make 'dedicated systems' for MSM if they like, M$ has never been
good for the web, throwing billions to play catch-up and releasing BS defective
products. My hope is that OSS/ODF and openstandards come to dominate
the web, if not the net. And why ask Silverlight? Why not ask Og/Theora?

.NET 4 -> I'd be inclined to try it on non-IIS host (helo cpan?)

I've been coding since the 70's (punch cards anyone??) and it seems that these are the best times ever for the industry.

I love being able to dip my toes into Joomla! 1.6 one day, ExtJS the next, and follow up with a chaser of Firefox extension development! Oh yea, don't forget about the client that wants that cool jQuery function they saw somewhere.

Just when I think I have finally heard all the buzzwords, I get roped into something like Layar (google it) and create a 500K SOBI2 site that displays geo targetted tweets on smartphones!

This will be the year of Nooku! You heard it here 1st (well maybe 20th or so...)

I prefer to choose template from theme house for my site(s) that closely match my client requirements. Then do a little adjustments/modifications.

Found that it's much faster to move on and focus to the site content.

I have scanned the link you included. Nice stuff. On my part, I like using templates that look simple, yet with impact. I don't like using templates that are overly designed. They are not pleasing to the eyes (for me).
