Email disclaimer

Post by Leftfield » Sat Jun 15, 2013 8:26 pm

Hi All,

Recently, I received an email from the Joomla! official email address ([email protected]). Content and sender are not important in this story but I noticed the disclaimed in it:
Disclaimer: This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Disclosing, copying, publishing, forwarding or distributing the contents of this information to anyone other than the intended recipient(s) without explicit permission is strictly prohibited.
The email disclaimers doesn't have any legal weight neither anyone won, with the breach of the disclaimer, on the US court. Not to mentioned the European law which clearly states if the receiver/customer haven't freely accepted or even gave his version to change it, it has no value at all. It's the same as the contract, if the other side didn't signed it, it is pointless.

Any chance to change this in the official emails?

You should talk to the person it came from. Because everyone controls what text shows up in their emails.

No worries. You could even contact them through opensource matters (I think they handle the legal issues for Joomla)

No no, I didn't want to complain. Sorry if I sounded like that.

I wouldn't call it complaining. This is open source so everyone has to do their part. i.e. we all chip in for the greater purpose.

It's more than likely something for their legal team. And they might be able to best clarify the law best and why they do it. (I"m not a lawyer)
