Canoncal url: a possible simple workaround while waiting for a fully working sef router

Hi,
I'm not an expert but I was thinking if it could not be easy to add a "canonical" field in articles and menus parameters where to put the canonical url.

For example if I create an article with Title "My article title" and alias my-article-title and I create a menu item pointing to that article with the same alias, the article will be reachable with both http://www.mydomain.com/id-my-article-title and http://www.mydomain.com/my-article-title urls.

But if if the "canonical" field is implemented I could put in both article and menu parameters "http://www.mydomain.com/my-article-title" so that a <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com/my-article-title"> is added to both pages... and Google is happy :-)

Am I wrong? Couldn't this be easy to do while we wait for a "perfect" SEF url rewriting?

Wait a few days and you can test the new Joomla 3.6.3 beta release I guess, with the new router implemented. Maybe that solves your problem and you can help test the new router also

Is there some documentation for this? I would like to understand it.

Any chance a article based Rel=canonical field might get added? I have a new client who wants to put their blog posts on their site and I need to use this but don't want more plugins installed. I love Joomla cause it's got so much in the core. Why not that?

3.8 is coming soon. Can you explain this at all? Will there be some way to enter in a url for canonical use in article or menu level?
