Rename "Users" in Joomla!

Post by Mr. Wimpy » Wed Jul 18, 2018 8:37 am

Yesterday I was watching a piece on the addictiveness of Facebook.
One quote got me thinking.
The only other industry that calls its customers "Users", besides technology, is[/are] drug dealers.
Joomla calls everybody "Users" and assigns everybody to "User groups".

But Joomla can be used to be anything we want:
Forums have members
Webshops have customers
Schools have students/teachers
Etc. etc.

Joomla should reflect this and rename "Users" to a friendlier, more human, more inclusive word.

"Users" can be "People" or "Persons".

"User group" can be (simply) "Group".
In the "Users" menu it is, but not in other places.

"Username" can be "Login name".
In the "Edit profile" screen this is already the case.

"Super Users" can be "Super person"... Okay, this one needs more thought.
BTW have you ever noticed that this group is plural while the rest is singular?

Regards,
Wim

Create overrides in your language files and you will enjoy whatever other name you want to use... use as in user.. ;)

;) I know... Thank you, anyway...

I believe that this small change makes Joomla (core) more people friendly, less tech-savvy and describes it better.
As I mentioned in my first post not every registered person is a user.

Besides: Joomla is in CMSs, not narcotics... ;)

That's why I proposed this in the Joomla Ideas Forum.

@Mr. Wimpy
The fact that you associate the word 'users' with drugs says a lot about you. There are many negative as well as positive connotations of the word 'users'. In the context it is used in Joomla the word 'users' has no relation to other connotations that people might (because of their lifestyle) attribute to it.

Many words have several connotations ... if you choose to place a meaning (which is out of context) that, in the long run, will prevent you from understanding concepts.

I too would prefer it was to stay as "users".

I think it's the standard term and it would feel like change just for the sake of it.

Also, some of the API calls use the term "user" so the change might just make things _more_ confusing.

Finally, Windows and Wordpress also user the term "users", we don't have to copy them, but the term certainly isn't as controversial or unusual as the quote makes out.
