"Show Sub-menu Items" does not work

Post by morktron » Mon Mar 26, 2012 9:15 am

Joomla 2.5.3

Hi it seems as though the "Show Sub-menu Items" does not work - more is said about it here

Basically when "Show Sub-menu Items" is enabled then according to the tooltip this should happen: "Expand the menu and make it's sub-menu items always visible"

It only makes them visible if you are on the parent item or one of it's sub-menu items.

The work around is to use a third party alternative to the default Joomla menu - or use css.

It would be great if someone on the bug squad could check this out and implement a fix for the next release

There is another work around or rather another way of doing it without using actual menus at all.

Before you start make a note of all the relevant addresses to which you want the 'menu' items (which are really going to be links) to point.

Create a 'Custom HTML' module, i.e. not a menu.
Call the module something meaningful and give it the position where you want it to appear on the relevant page(s).
Write a list of items so they look like a menu and give them the same names as the Menu and/or sub-menu items.
Link each item on the list to the relevant URL (web address)
Decide which pages you want the module to appear and select accordingly.
Publish the module.
Test that it works.

Using this method you can easily make the 'menu' and it's items display in anyway you want and put in images and additional information etc.

Thanks TenTrees, yes that is definitely a workaround. The only downsides are that editing the menu afterwards would not be fun and that if you are using a commercial template you'd need to do a lot off css work to integrate it.

But thanks TenTrees for posting! :)

@morkton,
Whilst I accept if you are using two 'menus' that are independent you would have to keep them both up to date, it's really quite easy and quick to change wording/links in the type of module I'm suggesting.
Not sure what you mean about using a commercial template - unless the template doesn't have the position you want to use, I can't see a problem. If the template doesn't have the position you want then that would be true for a real menu as well.

TT
