Unable to delete User Groups

Post by shadowdancer36 » Tue Mar 19, 2013 12:39 am

I was first having issues with making parent user groups. I finally got it doing so by editing Public and clicking on Save & New. But then it made a new group named Public which I'm not able to delete. I'm sure this CAN'T be the true function of how this works. It feels like a few steps are missing. Especially when it comes to making parent groups and child groups.

There are no problems with creating new user groups. All user groups that are created must be a child of 'Public' or another user group that has been created.

It works that way because non of the Permissions for 'Public' are set. With the hierarchy the top level has no permissions and the lower down the list (a user group is) then the more Permissions are granted.

Permissions are added not removed
eg
  • Registered has 'Public' as parent and inherits no permissions from it.
    • 'Site Login' is then Allowed for Registered.
  • Author has Registered as parent and inherits 'Site Login' Allowed from it. And also inherits 'Not allowed' for the other permissions.
    • 'Create' and 'Edit Own' are then Allowed for Author

That was confusing to read. Sorry I'm a newbie. So I assume that all groups created should be under public?

Well why are my new groups set as parents?

Ok after reading it again i understood. But it doesn't explain why I'm having the problems I'm having in deleting the groups NOT under the public.

Some how you managed to alter something in the database that should not have been altered.

Have you directly edited the database ?

Have you installed an extension that is connected with user management ?

I have clicked 'Save and New' while editing Public user Group but unable to replicate your issue.

Set a new Joomla on a test environment (on your computer or another folder) and see if you can muck it up again please ? It would be good to find out how something that should not be possible(under normal usage) is happening ?

LOL I haven't installed anything that controls this. I was working on an issue where I was trying to get a particular component (Hello Me from Jomsocial) to only show for logged in users.

In doing so I got to messing around with permissions and this happened. I haven't went into my database and changed anything manually at all. I wouldn't even dare try that.

And I have tried to duplicate this on a new install with no luck.

Jomsocial is an extension that is connected with user management. Perhaps contact the devs of Jomsocial and ask how it affects the adding of user groups ?

I wind up doing a restore. I really didn't have time for all that. I still believe it's a bug. I didn't do anything out of the norm. I wasn't changing anything on Jomsocial side to mess with it's database. I was only trying to get a module to show.
