Could not instantiate mail function.

how can this be fixed? looks like a bug.

on-line. Everything was fine - the site has been live for 2 years, but today I noticed the error message. This was after I upgraded to 2.5.22

Is it using PHP mail? If so, try changing the set up to use SMTP Authentication rather than the PHP mail function().

i have tried that but smtp just crashes everything.

Sounds like you may have more problems on your site than originally thought...

everything was working perfectly until the upgrade to j.2.5.22 and then this error message.

i have checked the email address of the system sender and everything is ok. i have checked all the admin emails on the server and all are ok.

everything else on the site works perfectly.

The problem seems to have resolved itself. The email server did not clear the deleted emails (or did not recognise they were cleared). I set the admin email to unlimited and this seems to have fixed the problem.

The error is back! It disappeared and emails were sent. But it is now back and I cannot get rid of it!

This is a very serious problem.... can anyone give me a clue as to why this has happened after the update to 2.5.22

When you say the error is back, is it showing an error message? If so can you share it please? Or add a screen shot to the post?

@FDigital01 - I am just curious to know if yours was a new installation of 2.5.22 or an upgrade from an earlier version of 2.5?

The files in /libraries/phpmailer are different in 1.5 and again in 3.x but have remained the same within 2.5 at least from 2.5.8.

this was an upgrade. the site has been running for about a year with joomla 2.5 versions. this is the first time i have had a problem. nothing else was changed.

attached is a screen shot of the admin panel.

i have checked the emails and all are working correctly.

i have set them to unlimited so as to mitigate issues that may occur if mailboxes get full.

all extensions seem to be working correctly.

Are all email functions in Joomla nw working all right, after the installation of a new Joomla 3 site? Is it the latest version, 3.3.1?

the email works in the new joomla 3 set up but I have just noticed the "cannot instantiate email" on another joomla 3 site.

The commonality seems to be that I have updated them within the last 2 months. There is nothing special about the site and I have used the same template I have always used....this is very disturbing

That sounds as if some of the settings are not correct. If you are using the PHP Mail option, try switching to SMTP and use an external STMP server to forward the emails. Here are two tutorials:

that can't be the reason because i have 50 sites set up on this hosting server that have been running for 3+ years and only a couple recently have experienced the email problem. It seems to happen when I upgrade a site.

I think i found the problem. It seems something did not upgrade correctly which I changed these sites, so I have installed the joomla upgrade package and that seems to have fixed the problem.

me again... this problem has come back - or rather i didn't fix it ...

the mass email function does not work and i have checked everything i can think of and have re-loaded the update package but it is still a problem.

when i turned on the debugger i found that there were duplicate id's that were probably causing the problem, but i cannot find them.

the attached image is from the database where i did a table check and it says there are duplicate id's but i cannot see them??

how can i resolve this?

any ideas?

any help would be much appreciated.

This is definitely a bug of some sort. I have just had another site come up with this error.

Joomla 2.5 site. I have just updated to the latest Joomla 2.5.22 and admintools and akeebabackup. But nothing seems to work to remove this problem.

Can anyone shed light on this problem?
