Social Network - live 6 mths - 5000 members - Nbr 1 in UK -thanks to Joomla

UPDATE: 05 Nov 2007
>> According to Alexa rankings my new website is now the number 1 website in the UK in its market (divorce).
>> Ahead of one commercial rival (insidedivorce.com) that has a team of 15-20 permanent staff and many tens of thousands of pounds in advertising budget.
>> I think that this is a great message that joomla enables individuals to create a site that competes with and beats commercial sites.

Original Post>>

Well 3 months since I started building my site in Joomla my vision is really taking shape.

www.wikivorce.com

Site is full of all of the best community features and userbase is growing fast - thanks to all at Joomla and the third party developers.

My favourite extensions:

- Community Builder - Indispensable for community site (Used as the glue/framework for the community aspects of the site)
>> Provides flexibility control over registration/login
>> I just love the MySpace like feature when viewing a user profile

Check out this profile page - I just LOVE the tabs - it really shows everything about the user - lets my users really get to know each other!!
If you want a reason to use CB - take a look at this page:
example Community Builder user profile page

- Fireboard forum - Exceptional but new so buggy (used for Divorce Forum section)
>> destined to be THE forum for Joomla

- MyBlog - seems the best of the blog components but new so still limited features in my view (used for Divorce Blogs section)
I want more control over page where you browse and select which blog to view

- Bookmarks - wonderful component (used for Top Divorce Sites section)
>> Really brings to life your external links section

- Missus PMS - allows users to email each other privately (they have inbox on their profile)
>> Nice CB integration

- Flashchat - a good chat component (used for Divorce Chat section)
>> am working to improve integration with CB and home page to make it easier for users to start chats / invite people to chat

- Mediawiki - a solid wiki component (used for Divorce Guide section)
>> but it isnt intuative or easy to create nice looking pages so the wiki is slow to take off

EasyFAQ - neat FAQ component (used for FAQ section)

LiveUser - good whos online enhancement which i have combined with couple of other modules to achieve what i wanted

IRC maxwell page cache - recommended

I hope you like it, I would love to hear your comments.

Cheers
wikivorce team

If any has comments or ideas on community features i would love to hear them.

Also missed a nice extension off my list:

- JomComment is a very nice comment component that is working well with MyBlog
>> Its really nice to see users start to write their own blogs and see others comment on them

Oh and i also use Artio joom SEF but it doesnt work with all components and to be honest im finding SEF a pain.

Great !

Frankly, my site got a few referrals originating from your site, i think from the fireboard latest post module.

Havent tried myBlog yet, but from the site, seemed like THE blog system for system for Joomla. I like the myBlog CB plugin, looks neat.

Your frontpage got an error from the myblog module.

=)

*n'way, im using Artio too. Can i know which component doesnt work with it ?

Consistent presentation and excellent use of extensions.

I'm not sure you'd want to add more extensions, it might just add unwanted complexity.  I'd just focus on further integrating the existing extensions.

Also, you could work on the branding a bit - I'd like to see some original banner/logo (the current one is a little out of place), and then incorporate a favicon.
Best Regards,

This is great info and your site looks GREAT.  One question, how did you get the user profile page set up like that ?  Was there another plugin involved ?

Thx

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

To answer a few Q's:

ingeous - am flattered by the offer of some work - but i have a full time job and all my spare time is taken up on the wikivorce site

Who's online modules - to get the full effect i combined:
- mod_totalusers for the Our Community stats
- mod_liveusers for whos online list with pop-up link to profile when u mouse over
- standard mod_whosonline - just to get the text "we have X guests and N members online"
- mod_comprofiler online (hacked) to show list of who is currently in Flashchat. (you only see this when logged in!)
(this list of whos chatting really helped boost chatroom use - as did adding shoutbox and training users to shout chat invites)

Re: MyProfile screen:

This is basic CB but with plug-in tabs for other components:
- My Friends tab : CB Connections plug-in from joomlaplois
- My Details tab: Custom tab but using basic CB tab creation
- My Pictures tab: Nants gallery (i think ) from joomlapolis
- My Postings tab: Fireboard CB plugin from bestofjoomla.com site
- My Blog tab: Myblog CB plugin from azrul.com site
- Comments tab - forgot where i got this - either joomla.org or joomlapolis

Good luck all with your sites. ;D

Just to add a couple of good components I forgot to mention:

- SOBI 2 - provides a Yellow pages type business directory which is perfect for my directory of Solicitors

- Ajax RSS feeds - which are a great way to add live content which is update with no effort from admin (nice!)
I use them for live blog feeds from other divorce blogs.

I have also just integrated the SOBI 2 Google Maps into the solicitor directory section in case anyone
wants to see how that looks: :)

I've created a favicon as suggested....and it appears when you select the page while it is being loaded.

But on load it is replaced by the joomla favicon.

Does anyone know how i stop the joomla favicon overwriting my own??

How did u change the URLS of the profiles and such to not read in the default index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userProfile&user= way? Your's reads my-profile/userprofile-12.html?Itemid=114.

Any tips?

Yes - I am using Artio JoomSEF together with the SEF plugin for MyBlog that comes as part of the MyBlog download - goto azrul.com to get this plugin.

I love this site, not least because I had a similar idea a few years ago, as you can see I did nothing with the idea  :-[ In any case, I think you're doing a better job than I would of.

A couple of questions:

Do you plan to place ads on the site at some point?
I notice you have place a TimesOnline article on your site, how do you stand from a copyright point of view on that?

I like your site.  It has a clean appearance and is well organized with complete and appropriate content.  I like your choice and implementation of extensions.  I am impressed how you were able to make CB fit your needs (I use CB but never to its potential as it seems a bit complicated).

My only suggestion is that you figure a way to separate the four news items at the bottom of the frontpage.  They all seem to run together.  Perhaps you could alternate the item background colors.

Great job!
Rob

Just to say I have added a new component that I would recommend to anyone.

I'm now using Remository to manage files for users to download.

The next component I am eagerly awaiting is the subscription management component from Joomlapolis (the CB guys).

Two more updates.....

1) I have disabled IRCMaxell page cache as my site has more members than guests online
(this component caches pages for guests only).

2) I switched from Artio Joom SEF to sh404sef because Artio was creating thousands of duplicate URLs - which eventually really hurt performance

Well, Digg.com and Engadget.com rip other people's writings and even each other. Who cares if you give the original poster credit? If you didnt write them to get their permission, you are plagarizing. But blogs do it left and right online and no one cares.

I am currently going through the teething pains of expanding my site to new countries/markets.

I am struggling with the limitations of the Joomla menu structure.

At the moment trying JoomFish and the Language aware menu module.

Latest snag is that this menu module doesnt work alongside sh404SEF..... :'(

Worked til 2am last night on this problem......yawwwnnnn

Great and very impressive site. As for the favicon, try to put it in image directory of the template, and/or the image directory of the main directory, and/or the main directory to see what happens. I had this problem with 247clean template, I had to remove part of a line in the index.php file of the template (suggested by someone else).

Excellent site. You've obviously put a lot of work into it. I like the layout and the wide range of functionality, which has been integrated well. A very good example of the power of Joomla.

I am about to start work on a social network/community site with similar functionality (its not about divorce!) and so have 101 questions I could ask about what you used, how you set things up, etc.

Out of interest, did you develop the templates yourself or are they based on something that is available?

Very good indeed.
