At present time a migration/upgrade option has not been provided. Likely to become available when the first RC (release candidate) version of 1.6 is available.

Now that Joomla 1.6 RC1 has been released is there any further information about upgrading from Joomla 1.5.x to Joomla 1.6.

Would like to begin testing for potential issues so that the move to 1.6 can happen as soon as is possible.

cheers

Is there a good migration method in the works?

I am curious because the next planned Joomla release is 1.6 final. Where's the time+opportunity to publicly test migration in a beta cycle?

I am very interested in a good migration method, for the content more so (articles/structure/files) rather than a complete site. I hope this is possible soon.

Thanks

The only serious one I know of can be found here: http://www.matware.com.ar/downloads/joo ... grade.html. Nothing from the core developer team about a migration method.

There will be no official migration method, FYI. Per the PLT meeting notes from 17 November:

2. Migration script will be 3p extension and not officially supported by JBS. Will work toward an official migration tool for 1.7.

What kind of CMS offers an upgrade without a method to upgrade from the previous version!

Though there are quite a few changes from 1.5 to 1.6, we're not talking a major rewrite or it being version 2.0! :-\

Where does it say it's not an upgrade? Besides a short note from a meeting of the Joomla board, it's hardly common knowledge.
Search Google! There is quite rightly an expectation that you can upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6.

The users aren't going to be happy, and uptake of 1.6 will be stunted - just like 1.0 -> 1.5.

Actually, Google doesn't tell me that! http://google.com/search?q=Will+Joomla+1.6+gi ... e+apendage

The fact is, there is indeed an expectation that it will be possible to upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6. And why wouldn't there be? It is normal to be able to upgrade an incremental release of a piece of software, and there has been no real communication to the contrary.

if there weren't developer resources available to create an official upgrader until 1.7 then fine, we have to remember that volunteers contribute their time and be thankful for a good CMS, but IMHO it should have been communicated better and sooner that there will be no official upgrade.
If there were major changes which makes it technically problematic to upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 then IMHO it should have named it 2.0 and still communicated that there will be no official upgrade.

I'm not disagreeing with your comments I am only pointing out that there has been no statement that this is an upgrade. If I was in a position to have publicised the fact that there is no upgrade path I surely would have done but I am not.

No, I did not overlook this. I've been trying jUpgrade since the late Joomla betas. Kudos to the guy writing it, but it's no substitute for an official method of upgrade. As an example I can't even get on to the guy's site to download the latest version or read the documentation (not that I remember there was any) because it is down. That's extensions for ya.

Can't we just install a new 1.6 RC and load in a 1.5.22 database?

Have a look at maguirre's jUpgrade extension for 1.5 from the JED.

It's probably your best bet for upgrading a 1.5 installation, and to be fair, even though it's still in development, does a good job with what must be a difficult task! Your mileage my vary though. The latest version migrated most things for me, except the content lol. Also I had trouble logging in to 1.6 because of an issue of the user timezone parameters in the 1.6 DB being set as a numeric (1.5 style), rather than as a text string (1.6 style).

I would like a way to import 1.5 content, to a fresh 1.6 installation (not upgrade a 1.5 installation). Is this in the works?

Thanks

Unless someone has info to prove me wrong, the ONLY migration tool available for 1.5 to 1.6 right now is jUpgrade, which is going to take your whole site. Your best bet if you ONLY want content as of right now is to manually do it.

Been awhile since I have posted here so I'm still catching up to all the new changes in 1.6

I am sure the issues of migration from 1.5 is a tough nut to crack and I wouldn't expect to see one until 1.6 is Final, but considering how many people are currently running 1.5, don't you think the lack of a migration tool is going to discourage people from using the new 1.6 system?

And telling them it is planned for 1.7 is not going to make anyone feel better because 1.6 has been almost two years in the making. How long before the 1.7 RC is out?

I fully understand the hurdles involved especially when it comes to 3rd party apps use of the JDbase to store it's data.
Perhaps starting with the 1.7 project Joomla should take the position that 3rd party apps can read from the JDB but must store it's data in seperate DBs (or a second DB for all 3pd data) so migration could be much simpler going forward as the project evolves.

That would make Migration much easier as it would only need to deal with Joomla data structure which is locked and known by the JDevs.

Just a suggestion.
Congrats on the RC status I will try it on new sites.

please do NOT try the RC on new sites it is not ready to be placed on a public server yet especialy as a security audit has not been completed and there are known issues. Better to spend the time installing on a local server. Testing it properly and reporting all and any issues you find.

With great disappointment one more time, I see a new major release with disregard to the past. I can not express my gratitude enough for all that the Joomla! Community has done, especially the commitment of the core team. However, I think it is a fault of the core development team to make the unwise decision to not have a migration tool in place.

Years ago I had to make the decision to go with the new Joomla! fork or stay with Mambo, I went with Joomla!, a decision I have been happy with. I once again find myself at a crossroad to stay or leave... I do not think it will be the doom of Joomla! if migration plans are not part of the next major upgrade, but it certainly will reflect on the professionalism of the core development team.

This is a post I made in July of 2007: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=176017

I was just about to look through the forums for a migration tutorial and I found this thread. Wow you said it! After going from Mambo, to Joomla 1.0, to Joomla 1.5; I am soooooo disappointed to read that there will be no core migration utility to go to 1.6. I could post some long response as to the reasons why I and just about every other general Joomla user will think that is lame idea, but I will not. It will be said for me. But what I will say is that after years of supporting, I am beginning to look at other CMS's....sad cuz I ♥ Joomla, but this is just too much, once again.
