Host that allows J 2.5 and php 5.3 ?

Post by modernmagic » Sun Jul 18, 2021 3:48 pm

I have a potential client that has assign running 2.5 and requires PHP 5.3. He's not ready to commit to a full upgrade. Unfortunately siteground will not allow him to run PHP 5.3 after the end of 2021.

Does anyone know another way to host this site running these outdated insecure versions.

Get a VPS.

Do you have any personal recommendations?

I see https://www.inmotionhosting.com/ might be good.

There's a sure-fire way to motivate a potential client: tell him it will cost $400 per month to set him up with a VPS service (as @Per suggested). This will either get the person to choose between (a) migrating his site to J! 3.x, (b) try to find another person to maintain his outdated website for a cheaper amount of money, or (c) let things happen and, by the end of the year, his website will just stop working altogether. In any case, because this is a potential client, you haven't earned anything yet (in fact, it's cost you your time using this forum to obtain an answer that probably won't meet this person's expectations) and, therefore, you probably don't have anything to lose, either.

The main question—the big question that this person needs to answer—is what's stopping that person from updating? There's no technical reason why outdated software needs to be kept; the most-common reason why people never solve their problems is because they fear difficult decisions. Once you make the decision to do something—no matter how fearful one may be of the consequences—and you commit to a course of action, suddenly a huge burden is removed and people are so much happier.

We all have tough choices to make. While nothing is impossible (and you can put a price on just about anything to identify just how improbable it would be to make the "impossible" possible) that's just "life".

We are not permitted by the rules of this forum to recommend things; there are other good reasons why we shouldn't recommend things: we all have different operating budgets and different business goals. So, while it's possible to recommend a VPS solution, the solution depends on whether your client can (a) afford it, or (b) does it generate a financial benefit that offsets the cost? That's what you need to tell your potential client and use it at a test of their genuineness to find a real solution to their needs. 8)

Per and Sozzled are absolutely correct and I'm leaning towards Sozzled's detailed response.

Many years ago I had a client who "required" me to support an obsolete, and definitely unsafe system. I dropped the client because I was not willing to risk my reputation. (Also, my insurance carrier would have screamed.)

I totally agree. All my clients pay a monthly management fee so that this never happens.

You can create up a vps at linode/vultr/digitalocean for $5/mo.
Add full back ups for $2/mo (or just use akeeba).
IF there are issues, just wipe the whole server and restore from a backup.
