Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administrato
I've upgraded from joomla 1.6 to 1.7 and now I can't edit "administrator/template manager/my template/ edit main page template". When i press "save" or "save and close" or even if i press "cancel" following message appears.
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /administrator/index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. )
I probably updated from 1.6.3 to 1.7

Hi
I do not directly have you answer. But can you provide some information about your directory permissions?
Backend > Site Menu > System Information > Directory Permissions
Please provide the status of the directories.

I checked permissions.
All are writable
except one this.
configuration.php unwritable
should it be writable? if yes how?

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Hmm
That file should be unwritable. It is correct.
Could you check two things?
1. On your FTP server: Do you have the file /administrator/index.php ? What is the CHMOD for it? (Also check if you might have a duplicate of this file with (2) behind the filename.)
2. On your FTP server: What name does your htaccess file have? Is it ".htaccess" or is it "htaccess.txt"? (Also check if you might have a duplicate of this file with (2) behind the filename.)

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Please forgive me if i become a little silly when answering,
1. I don't use FTP program so i went to cpanel and then file manager. I searched for "index.php" in "public_html" There were many index.php files but i clicked on "administrator/index.php". Its chmod was 0644
then checked for index2.php but not found any file.
2. Yes there is a file public_html/htaccess.txt chmod 0644 with a sign of red T on it. I think it has been made by joomla when i updated joomla. Because i renamed it to .htaccess when i was on j1.6 but not sure.
Yes there is also i file public_html/.htaccess chmod 0644 which i remember i made my self by renaming htaccess.text to .htaccess when i was on j1.6
There are many other .htaccess files but not directly in public_html but in subdirectries of public_html
There is no file with 2 behind its name

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
As a first step, could you rename your htaccess.txt file so it becomes .htaccess? (Your existing .htaccess file have to be named something else.) I don't know if there is any difference between the two files, but one is for J1.6 and one is for J1.7 I guess. What the red T means I don't know. Maybe you will find a hint in your cpanel
Also check the CHMOD of your admin folder.

My friend, at the moment I don't know what it could be. It might as well be something very easy to solve. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.
Meanwhile I would like to recommend you to contact your host and ask them if they have any security rules that might be the cause of the blocking. (Ask for mod_security and they will hopefully know what you are asking for.)

Hi again
I don't know if the following solution is good to do (off security reasons) or even if it will work. But you can try it and if it works you know what your problem is.
In your .htaccess file in the root add the following lines:
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
Save and see if your problem is solved. Better is to try one of the rows at a time to see if it works. No need to disable both if one will do.
Let us know.

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Well. If it works with another template, your current template are either somehow broken, or it is not fully compatible.
Try by reinstalling. If it still doesn't work and you really want to keep this template you have to dig into your template files. Maybe the creator of the template or someone at the template forum (at this site) knows about this problem.

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Dear frighten,
sorry for disturbing you again.
I uninstall my template and reinstall a fresh downloaded copy. But it contains all features of previous uninstalled template. even it shows that images which i replaced on old template with my own images. Means after uninstalling, there remained its related files. so problem did not solved.
I went to file manager then public_html. there was tmp folder containing files related to my template after uninstalling. i deleted all files. reinstall template. template loaded with its own features like images and other setting. But still can not edit index.php
I think some information remains still there after uninstalling.
Problem may be solved if i am able to completely remove all files and information of my template and reinstall fresh template.
May you help me how to completely remove related files of my template.

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Hi
I think you have done correctly when you first uninstalled the template and then deleted the temp files. That is correct.
You say you can still see the favicon (the small image in the address bar). This is normal and has nothing to do with Joomla. For some reason those small icons are kept in the browser cache. In some browser (IE) you have to manually delete the old favicon so the new one can be showed. You can check in your filemanager under your template to see if it is the new or old one.
Regarding the files and settings that are still there. Some of these could be once again in your browser cache. Try to delete the cache once and for all. Others are probably settings you made in the Joomla backend, like modules in module positions.
And for your original error. If it still remains. I recommend you to contact the creator of the template. He/She/They should know.
Just to be sure about one thing. The template you are talking about is your frontend or backend template? Because your problem was regarding /administrator/index.php

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
Hello Amoooc,
I had a similar problem to this one so I installed admin tools as you suggested. Is there a rule about the permissions for each directories/files?
Right now, my directories are either set to 775 or 755 and my files are mainly set to 644.
Thank you very much for your help guys
(I received the error about not being able to access administrator/index.php when I try to update the admin e-mails under the properties of a form (RSForm! Pro))
*************************************
EDIT
*************************************
I finally found how to fix my problem!
I learned that if you are running apache v2.0.0 and higher, you cannot turn off mod_sec into the .htaccess.
In fact I needed to add those three lines :
in this file :
right under those 2 lines :
I hope it can help!
PS : At first I was putting the code lines into random spot in the file, but it only worked when I placed them under the vhost include line.

I'm some reluctant about "amooc" post. will it solve my problem. I've installed it now and fix permissions. directries are 0755 files are 0644. but no benefit.
Second I'm completely unable to understand what "Cocotten" is describing in upper post.

Hi,
I experienced the same problem. I checked my .htaccess and disable this:
RewriteRule .* index.php [F]
after I commented out (put # before the line), my administrator running just like before. I dont know if this is the same situation with you, but it worked for me.

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
I'm having the same problem but I also cannot log in from the back end. I'm able to view and login only on certain computers none of which are my home computers. I have full access and can view my website at work, but not from my home PC or my wives Kendal. Other people have complained that they are getting the same error when visiting my webpage. I want to know if I can hire someone to fix this issue.
Here's the error I'm getting:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

I had the same problem. In my case, it was my web content filtering tool that blocked the communication between the client and the server. It assumed that the code in the URL was an SQL Injection.
We configured the web filter properly and the problem was fixed.

Re: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /administ
My Solution:
I had this frustrating problem when attempting to alter protostar's index.php from the backend.
I eventually bypassed the back-end altogether. I accessed the index.php via FTP, making the change and saving the index.php right back into the directory.
I still don't know what the deal is with the backend route being denied. I can alter everything else (like the css/html) but none of the php's.
UPDATE:.................
Contacted my web host. They added an exception to my security rules which solved the problem.

Hello,
I faced the same problem at a Joomla 1.5 website also. I was using cPanel's directory privacy, and I manually deleted .htaccess
I restored the .htaccess and I removed directory privacy through cPanel
