Creating replica 2.5 site before upgrading to latest getting page can not be displayed

I have created a subdomain on my website, installed joomla, emptied the database and imported from the current one. When I go to the site, I get This page can't be displayed. What am I doing wrong?

For copying a Joomla! site, Joomla! need not be installed.

Copying of a Joomla! site involves copying the files and importing the database content. After that the file configuration.php has to be changed for the change in the database connectivity and folder locations (tmp and log).

Review of the document https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website would be of help.

As the documentation specifies, use of extensions such as Akeeba Backup (https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... ba-backup/) would be of help for smoother copying of site.

Awesome, thank you! I will certainly give this a try. I'm always nervous 'upgrading'. If for some reason I can't get this to work, how much is it to upgrade to the latest Joomla?

You are on the right path. Definitely, first, you have to do the upgrade in a test environment. After testing the test site thoroughly and after making sure that the upgrade works, you can upgrade the production environment.

Make to use a copy of the file created by tools such as Akeeba Backup to copy the site. The original file created by these tools would come handy as a valuable back-up.

Review of the topic viewtopic.php?f=710&t=793171 would be of help in planning your migration. Make sure that the third party extensions are compatible with the version of Joomla! 3 that you plan to migrate to.

I'm panicking......I'm getting JFolder::create: Could not create directory Path: /hermes/bosoraweb069/b287.

I now can't log into my 'live' site. I updated the wrong configuration file, but I put it back and would think I could log in after doing that, but can't.

Please HELP.

Generally, the error you mentioned could be caused by permissions issue.

When are you getting this error message?

What is your site's URL?

The main site is http://www.musicalinstrumentcity.com and the 'mock' site is http://www.joomla25.musicalinstrument.com. I was getting it on the main page. I changed the permissions of the log & tmp folders and might have it resolved now.

I am able to log into the main site now.

Was the site originally installed with a Template/Quickstart installer ?

I did read this about Virtuemart.......Virtuemart 2.6 has just released and according to virtuemart.net, it works under Joomla 2.5.xx

It might be little disappointment for those who are willing to run the Virtuemart with Joomla 3.x, but there is a good news for you. Virtuemart 3.x is on the way and it will support both Joomla 3.x and Joomla2.x.

I honestly don't remember if it was manually install or the template/quickstart installer. Is there any way to tell?

The problem with some 2.5/3.x compatible 3rd party extensions is that they use different install files. Even when a 2.5/3.6 compatible extension uses the same zip is that some will detect the version of Joomla and install the files accordingly. One way to avoid 3rd party extension files corrupting the update is to update the database and 3rd party extension files separately.

• Update the database with files from a fresh Joomla 2.5.28 install
  Install the 3rd party extensions into a fresh Joomla 3.7.2 install
  Then connect the 3.7.2 Joomla and 3rd party extension files to the updated database.

You might consider installing xampp on your PC (mamp on a mac) and performing the migration locally. That way you can try an alternative method of migrating.

1. Install a fresh Joomla 2.5.28
2. Create a new database and export/import the data from the database of your live site
3. Edit the configuration.php (of the fresh 2.5.28 install) to use the new data.
4. Go to the Joomla update component and run the update
   This allows you to update the database with fresh Joomla files without files from 3rd party extensions interfering with the process.
5. Install a fresh Joomla 3.7.2 in a separate folder to an empty database
6. Install your 3rd party extensions into the fresh 3.7.2
   This creates the 3.7.2 Joomla and 3rd party extension files
7. Edit the configuration.php (of the fresh 3.7.2 install) to connect to the updated database (that has your sites data)
   This connects the 3.7.2 Joomla and 3rd party extension files to the updated database (that has your sites data)

I did go through and made sure my folders are 755 and Files 644 (configuration.php 444).

I tried to fix the database to try to 'rid' the conflicting joomla update message and then went back under Joomla update to try to update it using the package. I'm getting JFolder::create: Could not create directory Path: /hermes/bosoraweb069/b287

What is it looking for in the above? I have attached a print screen.

Did you edit the the configuration.php after copying it to the sub folder ?
Did you create a new database and import the data so that your copy was not using the original database ?
Is the folder the copy is in the root of a sub domain or just a folder you created under your main folder ?

Perhaps consider installing a localhost on your PC and copying the site to there to test the update ?

Ok, I was able to get my Joomla updated to 2.5.28 and Virtuemart to 3.2.2 - everything was looking great on my site! I moved forwarded with the Joomla 3 upgrade, but something didn't go through properly......

when I try to log in to my control panel I get:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method JStringNormalise::fromCamelCase() in /hermes/bosnaweb20a/b287/ipw.musicali/public_html/joomla25/components/com_config/view/cms/html.php on line 210

How can I fix it?

I changed the error reporting to none in the configuration.php. I wasn't able to get into the backend to try to continue the update, so I uploaded the Joomla! 3.5.1 files manually - all but the configuration file. I am able to see the website fine joomla25.musicalinstrumentcity dot com, however I can not access the backend. All I get it this:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.


Any thoughts how I can resolve this? Thanks in advance.

Your ssl cert is for http://www.musicalinstrumentcity.com, musicalinstrumentcity.com not the subdomain
In the configuration.php set
public $force_ssl = '0';

Make sure there is not hard coded reference to the main domain. VM used to store the site url in it's configuration file not sure if it still does ?)

The root folder (/joomla25) for the subdomain is below the root folder for the main domain. This can cause confusion ... sometimes people think that /joomla25 is site root but it is not. While /joomla25 is the root folder for the subdomain ... the actual site root is just /

In the configuration.php
absolute/root/site-folder/joomla25
but
In .htaccess (if #RewriteBase is uncommented) it's
RewriteBase /
not
RewriteBase /joomla25

If the subdomain folder /joomla25 is level with the domain folder and not below it then your server is misconfigured ... because https://musicalinstrumentcity.com/joomla25/ displays the subdomain site

Addendum
.htaccess is recursive ... so if /joomla25 has no .htaccess then the rules of the .htaccess in the domain folder will be honoured. If you suspect something in the .htaccess to be causing problems (like a rewrite rule that uses the domain name) ... then rename the .htaccess in /joomla25 and replace it with a blank one.

I have two issues - One I have no idea what this means and two my concern is I'd be updating this on the main site and not the replicated site.

If you ftp those up then you will break your Joomla site. They should not adversely affect the Joomla update. In any case it might not be those files it might be in a 3rd party extension that is called by one of those files.

The error in your subdomain is a server misconfiguration error or a hard coded path ... the deprecated code (in the main site) is code that is still used but will not be used in the near future.

Strongly suggest you set up a localhost on your PC and copy the subdomain site to there. Suggest Wamp as you can use different php versions with it.

I tried uploading all the files to another server as a test (I have a VPS). I got all the files uploaded and the website looks fine, however, when I go to login to the backend it just flashes and brings me back to the login. If I type the wrong password, it tells me that. Any thoughts why that is? What can I do to get in the back end in this case?

I contacted my hosting provider on Thursday and it went from they would upgrade it for nothing to they won't support me at all. So frustrating!!!
