Changes to Category List layouts between 2.5.6 and 2.5.28?

I am in the process of updating a site from 2.5.6 to 2.5.28. On this site is a category list page that shows the titles of the articles in the category as well as the first image found in each article. As soon as I update Joomla to 2.5.28 though this layout breaks and no longer displays that way. It just gives me a flat list of titles in a smaller font. Examples of both the old and new are shown below. I have done nothing to this page of the site other than upgrading Joomla:

If there is no way to get this old appearance back do you have any ideas on what I could do instead? A compatible component or plugin to make it look like the old one?

You are late with you updates. 2.5.28 was released in December 2014 and is now EOL.
The current version of Joomla is 3.2.7

Perhaps a hack of core files have been done instead of a proper override of the layouts.

I'm aware of the update thing, that's why we are doing this with the hopes of getting up to 3x once we get the kinks worked out of this.

Any idea what the name of the files are that controls the category list page layouts? I'll check them for changes.
