Won't load images in any gallery.....

Post by pollux114 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:29 am

Tried different galleries, tried a clean install of 1.6, still nothing. None of the galleries I've installed have been able to load images from a directory.
It was working fine, then all of a sudden it stopped.....I can't remember changing anything.

Anyone have this happen?

What's the average file size of your images or photo files? If they're rather large (megabytes instead of kilobytes) it's likely you will need to reduce them to a more web friendly resolution and/or size.

Nope, 300-500K..........and I went back to my working J1.5 install, and the same thing is happening there now actually. Must be a server/host level issue.

My suggestion is to reduce the file size of any photo or graphic being displayed by any Joomla! third party photo gallery extension. Ideally, 72 dpi, about 300-400 pixels wide. That will easily keep your file sizes smaller (less than 100K). You'll never notice the reduction in resolution on your computer screen/monitor. Print media resolution for graphics/photos is typically 200-300 dpi and that's unnecessary for web ready graphic or photo displays.

As for your server... Yes, if you're being hosted on a low cost (cheap?) shared server, due to it becoming overloaded with too many accounts (other hosted websites) and/or abuse, your hosting provider may have changed server specs to reduce CPU or RAM loads. That can happen at any time and while your website's Joomla! third party photo gallery extension(s) may have originally been fine, overnight you may see problems with large sized files now loading too slow or not at all.
