1.6 subfolder test site slow to load

I'm running a 1.6 test site out of a sub folder of a 1.5 live website hosted on Siteground. The 1.5 "root" site acts normal, but the 1.6 test site really chokes, taking about 10 seconds to load and become functional.
The only odd thing I'm doing is I'm using a different template for each of the 5 menu items on the 1.6 test site. Could that be the problem?

I have a similar problem.
I have all the settings similar, the template is similar (tested it), but my 1.6 seems a second slower than the previous (already slow) 1.5

Why is 1.5 faster: http://www.veneti.info/

than 1.6: http://www.veneti.info/jupgrade

Same problem here.

Joomla 1.5.22 site is at http://blessedsacramentonline.org/joomla15

Joomla 1.6 site is at http://blessedsacramentonline.org/joomla16

The 1.5 site loads within a second. The 1.6 site takes 20 seconds to load.

I was also able to import most of my Joomla content into WordPress (using a WordPress plugin) which is at http://blessedsacramentonline.org which I think we may be going with instead due to all of the frustrations with 1.6

I checked with my server admins about why Joomla 1.6 is so slow and here was their response...

"It seems that Joomla 1.6 has more mysql queries than 1.5 which is causing the slowness. While loading 1.6 I could see mysql is taking more resources where as 1.5 doesn't cause any load on mysql. "

It is really slow.
Somehow it is up to the host settings and system.
